Every great idea starts with someone asking, "How can we make our community safer?"

Our firefighters answered that question through Community Risk Reduction projects focused on education, prevention, and solving local challenges. Some projects reached many residents, while others equipped our crews with new resources or addressed risks before they became emergencies.

Over the next several weeks, we'll be introducing each project and the firefighters behind it. Join us in celebrating their commitment to making New Hanover County a safer place to live, work, and visit.

Jeffrey's project helped better prepare our crews for unexpected animal encounters by providing a simple resource that can be readily available when responding to fires and vehicle crashes.

🔥 It’s Fire Prevention Week! 🔥

This year’s theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging is a Superpower™,” focuses on something most of us use every day: rechargeable devices and lithium ion batteries.

Take a few simple steps to charge safely in your home:

🔋 Use the charging cord that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.

🔋 Charge devices on a hard, flat surface instead of beds, couches, or under pillows.

🔋 Unplug devices once they are fully charged.

🔋 Stop using batteries that are damaged, swollen, unusually hot, or have an unusual odor.

🔋 Keep charging devices away from exits and your escape path.

Small habits can make a big difference in preventing fires. Take a few minutes this Fire Prevention Week to check how devices are being charged in your home and help keep your family safe.

Today, Station 13 and one of our Public Health interns joined the Barefoot University Homeschool Program for a fun morning of fire safety education!

Children and families learned about basic fire safety, received hands-on fire extinguisher training, and explored the equipment carried on the fire truck. 🚒🧯

It was a great opportunity to learn, ask questions, and have some fun along the way. Thank you, Barefoot University, for inviting New Hanover County Fire Rescue to spend the morning with your families!

Today, members of New Hanover County Fire Rescue participated in Wawa’s Hoagies for Heroes competition during the grand opening of its newest Wilmington location.

NHCFR competed against teams from the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office and Novant Health, putting their hoagie-building skills to the test and bringing home 2nd place! 🥪🚒

As part of the competition, Wawa will make a donation to Safe Kids New Hanover, supporting efforts to keep children and families in our community safe.

Thank you to Wawa for including us in such a fun event, and great job to our NHCFR team for representing Fire Rescue well!
