Official Facebook of the Wilmington Firefighters Association IAFF Local 1590. During the workweek, the population swells to in excess of 150,000 people.
Since December 17, 1965, we have been the local affiliate of the International Association of Fire Fighters. Our Local represents approximately 265 active and retired members of the Wilmington Fire Department. We fight for the rights of firefighters in the City of Wilmington and are dedicated to the betterment of our community. Not only does that involve defending labor rights, engaging in concret
e legislative action, and providing a voice for the firefighters, but it also includes helping our community. Some of our community events include Aid to the families of fallen firefighters and first responders, Wilmington Classic hockey game benefiting the Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation, American Cancer Society, Christmas Toy Drive for Nemours AI DuPont Hospital for Children, coat drive, canned food drives, blood drives, and assisting with our local organizations. The City of Wilmington is the State of Delaware's largest city, and the only one with a fully paid professional firefighting brigade. The members of the Wilmington Fire Fighter's Association protect a community of about 71,000 citizens within a 17-square-mile area. Wilmington is comprised of everything from mansions to row homes, schools, and daycare centers, industrial and manufacturing properties, restaurants, hospitals, a prison, various waterways, the Port of Wilmington, a wastewater treatment facility, a landfill, I-95 and I-495, and high-rise offices and residential buildings. Our members work in six (6) fire stations within the City and provide firefighting and emergency medical services, specialized search & rescue services; along with a Fire Marshal's Office for Arson/Fire investigation, and fire education & prevention programs. They respond to over 20,000+ calls for service each year. Local 1590 Mission Statement
The Mission of the Wilmington Firefighters Association Local 1590 is to support our firefighters so that they may provide the highest quality fire, rescue, and emergency medical service to the citizens of the City of Wilmington. The desire is a comprehensive firefighting force that assists members in times of need and positively impacts the community through the department we proudly serve. To accomplish this mission, we shall be committed to:
- Advocating for personnel, training equipment, apparatus, infrastructure, and other resources necessary to enhance public safety.
- Pursue competitive wages, hours, and other work conditions so that we may recruit and retain a talented and diverse workforce.
- Protecting the welfare of firefighter personnel through education, charitable, political, legislative, social, and other community involvement.
- Respecting the rights of our members, employer, and the public in order to promote harmony within the Wilmington Fire Department.

Today, we remember and honor all those who gave their lives in service to our country. Memorial Day is a time to reflect on sacrifice, service, and the families forever impacted by that loss.
IAFF Local 1590 also extends our appreciation to all veterans, active military members, and especially the members of our department and union family who have served. Thank you for your dedication and commitment.
We hope everyone has a safe and meaningful Memorial Day.

Since the Wilmington Fire Department assumed EMS transport operations last year, our members have continued serving the citizens of Wilmington professionally and without hesitation.
Since the EMS rollout:
• Firefighters are regularly being ordered to work 36–48 consecutive hours
• Firefighters often spend 24 or more of those hours assigned to an ambulance
• At times, frontline ambulances are handling more than 20 calls during a single 24-hour shift
• Extended work hours and sleep deprivation negatively impact health, recovery, decision-making, and operational readiness
• At times, fire units are operating below recommended staffing levels in order to keep ambulances in service
EMS and fire suppression are both critical emergency services, and both must be staffed appropriately and safely.
The decision to transition EMS transport services was made by City and Fire Administration leadership. From the beginning, Local 1590 raised concerns about staffing, fatigue, and operational readiness during the rollout, including concerns that the department began the EMS transition and four-platoon schedule without enough operational staffing.
The City previously increased department staffing during the EMS transition and recently approved 12 additional firefighter positions, which is appreciated and an important step forward. However, those positions are not expected to begin until July 1, and the staffing challenges facing the department exist today. In addition, newly hired firefighters still require orientation, training, and assignment before providing operational relief in the field. Additional staffing improvements will still be needed moving forward.
Despite these challenges, Wilmington firefighters continue answering every call for service professionally and without hesitation. We hope City leadership recognizes the urgency of these staffing issues before exhaustion and understaffing become the accepted standard.

Early Sunday morning, Wilmington firefighters responded to a devastating fire at the Historic Mother African Union Church.
Mother African Union Church is not only a place of worship, but a cornerstone of Wilmington’s history and community. For generations, it has held deep cultural, historical, and spiritual significance to countless families throughout our city and beyond.
Wilmington Firefighters Local 1590 extends our thoughts and support to the congregation, clergy, and everyone impacted by this fire.
We also want to recognize the tremendous response by Wilmington firefighters and EMS personnel, along with the many New Castle County fire departments that assisted on scene and covered city stations throughout the incident. The cooperation and support shown throughout the response was exceptional and greatly appreciated.
Although the building suffered significant damage, the history and legacy of Mother African Union Church will continue to remain an important part of the City of Wilmington.

Today, members of D Platoon responded to a high-rise fire in the 500 block of N. Walnut Street. Despite challenging weather conditions with rain, sleet, and snow throughout the day, crews quickly located and extinguished a kitchen fire on the 12th floor, preventing extension to other apartments.
Strong work by all companies on the scene and a great example of the professionalism and teamwork our members bring to every call.

Residential structure fire quickly brought under control thanks to the fast, coordinated response of Wilmington Firefighters working on "D" Platoon at the 2700 block of Baynard Boulevard. Crews made an aggressive interior attack, completed primary searches, and ensured residents were evaluated — all while keeping our firefighters safe.
