Banned Books Week is October 4–10, and this year's theme, "Let Books Be," is a reminder of the importance of access to stories, ideas, and perspectives—even when they challenge us.

In 2025, the American Library Association documented 4,235 unique titles targeted for censorship, the second-highest number ever recorded. Of those titles, 1,671 represented the lived experiences of LGBTQIA+ people and people of color.

Libraries are places to explore new ideas, encounter different perspectives, and make your own choices about what you read. This Banned Books Week, let books be—and check out a book from our Banned Books display on the 1st floor of Randall Hall.

Ever wondered how people made ink before art stores existed? Join us at the MakerStudio for an ink-making workshop led by UNCW's own Katie Knoeringer where we transform simple tree branches into rich, handmade ink. ✒️

Drawing charcoal can be created by sealing branches in a metal tin (or layers of aluminum foil) and heating them in a fire. After a few hours, the wood carbonizes into beautiful, velvety charcoal sticks ready for drawing. Then, we'll grind the charcoal into a fine dust and mix it with water and a binding agent to create deep, expressive black ink—made entirely by hand.

Come get your hands a little messy and leave with a deeper appreciation for the art (and science) of making your own materials!

📅 Date: Wednesday, October 14
🕛 Time: 6 to 7 pm
📍 Location: MakerStudio, Discovery Hall (DH1065)

Address

601 S College Road
Wilmington, NC
