"Overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice. It is the protection of a fundamental human right, the right to dignity and a decent life.” — Nelson Mandela

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Association:
In January of 2014 reported that one 1 in 5 people experiencing homelessness had a serious mental illness and a close percentage had a chronic substance use disorder. By providing services to help people manage their mental health and/or substance issues, it can reduce to the risk of becoming homeless and shorten the amount of time people are homeless.

Knowledge is power, the more we know the better we can help those in need.

According to Mental Health America:
One out of five (20.1%) adults with a mental illness report they are not able to get the treatment they need. Having insurance does not mean access to care. Many people with mental illness report having an unmet need even though most are insured. This difference speaks to the importance of reviewing adequacy of insurance. This country has worked hard towards universal health care, now we need to make sure this health care adequately covers mental illness as well.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 1 in 5 children, between the ages of 13-18, either currently or at some point during their life, have had a seriously debilitating mental disorder. To stop the violence that we are seeing in our streets maybe we must stop the violence within their heads!
