Wilmore Fire Drone Academy – Class 4

Class 4 of the Wilmore Fire Drone Academy covered Chapters 4 and 8 of the FAA Part 107 Study Guide, building on members’ knowledge of airspace, regulations, and safe flight operations.

Members also received their first introduction to the department’s UAS fleet. The class covered the different aircraft, their primary use cases, and how the drones can be used interchangeably depending on the needs of a mission.

Understanding the capabilities of each aircraft helps our members select the right tool for the job, whether supporting emergency response, search operations, or other public safety missions.

We’re continuing to build the knowledge and skills needed to develop a capable, mission-ready public safety UAS program.

Wilmore Fire Drone Academy – Class 3

Class 3 focused on aviation weather and its effects on small UAS operations.

Students learned how to read METARs and TAFs, identify important weather factors such as wind speed and direction, visibility, cloud ceilings, precipitation, and temperature, and understand how changing conditions can affect drone performance and flight operations.

The class also covered how to use weather information for pre-flight planning, in-flight decision-making, and determining when conditions may require adjusting or postponing a mission.

Another step closer to putting these skills to work in the field.

A little light rain wasn’t going to stop training.

Last night, WFD members spent time training on the department’s ladder truck and practicing different methods for removing a patient from an elevated position.

The first scenario required members to package a patient in a Stokes basket and secure the basket to the side of the aerial platform using the platform’s Stokes brackets.

The second scenario combined ladder operations with equipment from our Special Hazard Team’s rope rescue cache. Members worked through a system to suspend the packaged patient from the bottom of the platform for removal.

These types of evolutions require more than simply operating the equipment. They require communication between crews, proper patient packaging, equipment familiarity, and an understanding of how different disciplines and pieces of equipment can work together during a rescue.

Rain or shine, training continues.

📊 August at Wilmore Fire

August was another busy month for the members of Wilmore Fire Department, with 66 incidents requiring a response from our crews.

Our monthly statistics give us a look beyond the total call number — including when calls occurred, which days were busiest, and how our units were utilized throughout the month.

A few numbers from August:

* 66 total incidents
* Engine 81 responded to 48 incidents
* Car 801 responded to 28
* Car 800 responded to 26
* Squad 84 responded to 10
* Drone/UAV was utilized on 2 incidents

Every number represents a call where someone needed help — and every response represents members of this department stepping up to answer it.

Thank you to our members for continuing to put in the time, training, and work that keeps Wilmore protected. 🚒

Class 2 of the Wilmore Fire Department Drone Academy is in the books.

Yesterday, members continued their preparation for the FAA Part 107 exam by focusing on airspace and flight restrictions—an important part of understanding where and when drone operations can safely and legally take place.

Students worked through airspace classifications, operating limitations, restricted and prohibited areas, and other flight restrictions they will need to recognize as future public safety drone pilots.

The classroom portion of the academy continues to build the knowledge members will need before moving into flight training.

Next up: Weather and its effects on small unmanned aerial systems.

Yesterday, Wilmore Fire was honored to host area fire departments and one of the greatest to ever do the job, Fire Chief Rick Lasky. His lecture on Pride and Ownership was shared with true conviction and a passion for bettering the fire service. His message inspires a love for the job, drives home the mission of “them” before “us”, the dangers of ego in the fire service, and what true service to the public should look like.

Firefighters from Wilmore, Nicholasville, Jessamine Co., Elizabethtown, Georgetown, Morehead, Lancaster, Lexington, and more gathered in the room for one reason, to be better firefighters.

Thank you to Mayor Harold Rainwater and Councilman Wes Metcalfe for spending the morning with us and getting a glimpse of what the fire service means in Wilmore.

This event would not have been possible without the generosity of our sponsors: Atlantic Emergency Solutions, PECCO Inc., 911 Fleet and Fire Equipment, America's Bravest Equipment Company, and Central Kentucky FOOLS

A huge thank you to GCFVineyard Church for allowing a bunch of fireman to take over your building and giving us a great venue and support staff to host such an impactful lecture. Your support is truly appreciated.

Lastly, thank you to everyone who attended. Our intent was never to sell out or host the largest event, but to gather likeminded firefighters and better the fire service. We hope to see you all again next year.

🚁 WFD Drone Academy | Class 1

Members of the Wilmore Fire Department have completed the first class of our Drone Academy as we begin preparing our next group of FAA-certified drone pilots.

The first class focused on FAA Part 107 regulations and the roles and responsibilities of the Remote Pilot in Command (RPIC). Understanding the regulations is an important first step before members move into the hands-on flight portion of the program.

Part 107 certification is required by the FAA for all public safety members who will operate department drones during emergency operations. Members are learning not only the requirements for earning their certification, but also the responsibilities that come with operating an unmanned aircraft during emergency incidents.

Over the next several weeks, members will continue working through the knowledge required to successfully pass the FAA Part 107 exam before moving into flight training.

📚 Next week: Airspace Familiarization & Flight Restrictions

This is the beginning of a multi-week training program designed to give our members the knowledge and skills needed to safely incorporate UAS operations into WFD emergency response.

🚁 One class down. Several more to go.

The Wilmore Public Safety Honor Guard proudly participated in its inaugural event this morning at the City of Wilmore’s 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony.

Comprised of members of the Wilmore Fire Department and Wilmore Police Department, the Honor Guard was honored to present the colors as our community came together to remember the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, including the 343 firefighters and 72 law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Today’s ceremony marked the beginning of a new tradition for the Wilmore Public Safety Honor Guard. We are grateful for the opportunity to serve our community in this capacity and to help ensure that the sacrifices of those who served—and those who continue to serve—are never forgotten.

We remember. We honor. We will never forget.
