Don’t forget that you can use your SNAP benefits at some local farmers markets. At the welcome table at the farmers market, ask if they accept EBT as a form of payment. If they do, they should give you a market scrip in exchange for your EBT payment.

Keep in mind that at some markets the option to use EBT depends on the vendor.

Fall is a time for planting and preparing for the upcoming growing season. It is also a good time to submit soil samples to the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services for agronomic recommendations specific to what you are growing.

Now is also the time to submit soil samples for faster turnaround times and to avoid peak-season testing fees. Soil testing is free for North Carolina residents from April 1, 2026, through Nov. 30, 2026. Learn more in the release below!

As we move into fall and begin preparing for the winter feeding season, now is an important time to evaluate your hay supply and develop a feeding plan for your livestock.

With hay coming from a variety of sources this year, producers may encounter forage with elevated nitrate levels. Testing hay for both nutrient content and nitrates can help identify potential risks and allow you to make informed decisions about how that forage can be safely used.

Join Johnny Rogers and Matt Poore for a one-hour webinar covering:

• Factors that contribute to nitrate accumulation in forages
• Common situations that can increase the risk of nitrate poisoning
• Symptoms of nitrate poisoning in livestock
• Proper hay sampling and testing
• Strategies for safely feeding high-nitrate hay

Tuesday, October 13 | 12:00–1:00 PM
Online Webinar

Registration: https://go.ncsu.edu/nitraterisks2026

Testing your hay now can help you better understand your forage supply and develop a safe, effective feeding plan for the winter.

On the SNAP application, the word "household" refers to people who live together and buy and cook food together. 🏠

College roommates, for example, would be considered two separate households if they don't buy and cook their meals together. Parents living with adult children may also be considered separate households.

Knowing your household size is important as that determines the income limits you will have to follow to find out if you are eligible for SNAP.

Did you know? You don't have to use your SNAP benefits right away. 💳 🛒

If approved for benefits, you will receive a monthly allotment determined by your local DSS office. Benefits not used by the end of the month can be used the next month, meaning they can add up over time. Keep in mind, however, that benefits not used for 12 months will expire.
