MARK YOUR CALENDARS!
NATIONAL PRESCRIPTION DRUG TAKE BACK DAY is this Saturday, October 24, 2026, from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM.
The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind everyone that National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is just around the corner!
Twice each year, in April and October, communities across the country participate in this important event. It provides a safe, convenient, and responsible way to dispose of unused, unwanted, or expired prescription medications.
Why is this so important? Because medications left sitting in medicine cabinets can end up in the wrong hands. They can be misused, stolen, or accidentally taken by children or others for whom they were never intended. Proper disposal helps prevent prescription drug abuse, accidental poisoning, and potentially tragic consequences.
The numbers speak for themselves! During the April 2026 National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, Americans turned in an incredible 642,410 pounds of medications — more than 321 tons!
Since the program began in 2010, more than 21,034,225 pounds, or approximately 10,517 tons, of unwanted medications have been collected nationwide.
Think about that for a moment. That’s more than 10,500 tons of medications that are no longer sitting in homes where they could potentially be misused or accidentally ingested.
As your Sheriff, I encourage everyone to take a few minutes to look through their medicine cabinets, drawers, and other places where old medications may have been forgotten. If you no longer need them, please take advantage of this opportunity to dispose of them properly.
Something as simple as cleaning out your medicine cabinet could prevent an accidental overdose, protect a child, or even save someone’s life.
Working together, we can make Frederick County a safer place for our families, our children, and our entire community.
Thank you for doing your part!
