Today we recognize the retirement of Michael Poirier; a 21 year Emergency Communications Officer for the CCRCC.

"After 21 years of dedicated service as a 911 dispatcher with the Cumberland County Regional Communications Center, Michael Poirier is signing off for the final time.

Michael’s career of service began when he was just 18 years old with the United States Coast Guard. From there, he continued answering the call to serve his community as a wrecker operator, a Firefighter, and ultimately, a 911 Dispatcher.
For 21 years, Michael has been the voice on the other end of the line when people needed help the most. He has answered the calls, sent the help, guided responders, and been a steady voice through some of the most difficult moments imaginable.
To many of us, he will always be known simply as “Desk Box Mike.”

Mike, after a lifetime spent serving others, the time has finally come to hang up the headset.
From the Coast Guard, to the tow truck, to the firehouse, and finally to the dispatch center—you have spent your entire adult life answering the call.

Mike, thank you for 21 years of service, dedication, friendship, and countless calls answered.
Your watch is over. Your service will never be forgotten.
Congratulations on your retirement, Mike"

We wish Mike and his wife a healthy and fulfilling retirement. As many of us know, this job is not only a sacrifice for those who serve but also those who love us the most.

Cheers!

Last week the CCRCC (Cumberland County Regional Communications Center) had the opportunity to host and collaborate with PRCC (Portland Regional Communications Center) during a planned re-location for building maintenance.

During this 48 hour period, PRCC 9-1-1 call takers were able log in to the state 9-1-1 system and answer calls for their jurisdiction, as if they had never left their own building.

This partnership opportunity allowed both Agencies to complete their separate duties all while being under one roof. The success of this temporary re-location proved to be a testament to the values of pre-planning, partnership and resiliency - three things that are foundational for the daily work of 9-1-1 professionals.

📸 Pictured are some members of the CCRCC & PRCC day and night crews embracing the comradery that comes with this taxing profession.

Today we highlight the behind the scenes work of our crew who worked for the three-alarm fire in Casco, Maine.

The CCRCC received a call from a witness at 1206 reporting a home and barn on fire on Route 11. The call was dispatched out to Casco Fire within 1 minute of receipt (This includes address and phone number verification policy.)

Over the next 6 hours, our crew coordinated response efforts from far and wide.

CCRCC Partner Agencies (Dispatched out of our center) : Casco Fire, Naples Fire, Raymond Fire, Bridgton Fire, New Gloucester Fire, Gray Fire, Harrison Fire, Windham Fire, Sebago Fire, Baldwin Fire, North Yarmouth Fire, Standish Fire, Gorham Fire & The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.

Mutual Aid requests : Poland Fire, Mechanic Falls Fire, Otisfield Fire, Waterford Fire, The State Fire Marshal's Office, Red Cross and Maine Department of Transportation.

During this call, all other emergency and non-emergency calls to our center were handled with care and timely service.

Organization, communication and teamwork play a large role in these types of incidents. Our staff train hard, but ultimately the true test and the ultimate sense of pride comes when you see a system in action when it really matters. We could not be more proud of the work that is done by our large team - day in and day out.

To the men and women in the field, we commend your dedication and bravery.

The CCRCC has had a lot to be proud of over the last week. Many employees attended the Maine Chapter of the National Emergency Number Association (NENA) Conference in South Portland, along with the awards ceremony celebrating achievements for 2025. (See photos for our highlights)

Additionally, one of our very own has earned their Bachelors degree from the University of Southern Maine while working full-time as an Emergency Telecommunicator. (See photo)

We could not be more proud of the amazing things that are happening in and outside of our Center. Please help us in showing appreciation and recognition for just a few of our difference-makers.

The sky turns dark, heavy with storms rolling in. Clouds stretch low over the horizon, and the radio towers stand tall—steady, constant, cutting through the noise of the night.

Inside, the lights don’t dim.

Headsets on. Screens glowing. Voices steady.

While the world watches the storm, we listen for the calls that come with it. Every crack of thunder, every flash in the distance—we know the community may need us. And when they do, we’re here.

Calm in the chaos. A voice in the dark.
Always listening. Always ready.
Beneath the towers, we too stand tall.
