The Windham Police Department has recently received an increase in complaints regarding the unsafe and unauthorized operation of e-bikes throughout town.
We understand that e-bikes have become increasingly popular, particularly among young riders, and they can be a great way to get around town. However, we are seeing and receiving complaints about riders traveling at excessive speeds, failing to stop at intersections, riding against traffic or in the roadway, operating in areas where they may not be permitted, riding in groups in an unsafe manner, and performing stunts or other dangerous maneuvers.
Some of the vehicles being described as “e-bikes” may also not meet the legal definition of an e-bike under New Hampshire law. Electric scooters, mini-bikes, mopeds, and other motorized vehicles without pedals are not classified as e-bikes and may be subject to different laws and requirements.
Parents are encouraged to know what type of vehicle their child is operating, its capabilities, and the rules that apply to it. Please take a few minutes to talk with your children about safe and responsible riding before they head out.
Our officers will continue to respond to complaints and address unsafe or unlawful operation when observed. We want to thank everyone for their concerns.
