RECAP from 09/16/26’s Nihi Na’ach’ąąhí Á’té (We Are Painters!) Watercolor Workshop at Navajo Nation Museum!
Wednesday, September 16, 2026, the Navajo Nation Museum (NNM) was excited to welcome Jack Ahasteen and Diné Native Plants Program(DNPP) to cohost the third session of Nihi Na’ach’ąąhí Á’té (We Are Painters!) To kick off the workshop, Mr. Ahasteen took participants through his newest exhibit where he shared stories and inspiration from over 50 years of being a professional artist. Mr. Ahasteen also shared artwork from his sketchbook! After, Diné Native Plants Program(DNPP)’s Jesse Mike shared information about gathering local plant seeds before rainfall cut the plant walk short. Mr. Ahasteen’s illustrations in the book Nanise’ were used as a resource for DNPP’s Restoring Native Plants to Navajo Nation Lands Handbook. Artists then gathered in the Museum Dining Room to paint a Sheepherder’s Special Still Life. The sheepherder’s special included the following items, Spam, Hills Bros. Coffee, Blue Bird Flour, Morton Salt, and Clabber Girl Baking Soda. The still life also featured local plants and flowers, Globemallow, Cowpen Daisy, Rubber Rabbitbrush, and Hoary Tansy Aster. Artists were allowed to snack throughout the workshop and Mr. Ahasteen joined in on painting! At the end of the workshop, the sheepherder’s special items were raffled to participants.

RECAP from 09/02/26’s Nihi Na’ach’ąąhí Á’té (We Are Painters!) Watercolor Workshop at the Navajo Nation Museum!

Wednesday, September 02, 2026, the Navajo Nation Museum (NNM) collaborated with Diné Native Plants Program(DNPP) to host the second session of Nihi Na’ach’ąąhí Á’té (We Are Painters!) It was a beautiful day for a short hike to the sandstone slabs on the Museum Hiking Trail. The days leading up to the workshop had rained and the plants were popping! The prompt for the second session was to paint plants and flowers. Diné Native Plants Program(DNPP)’s Jesse Mike started the session by sharing information about DNPP's program and upcoming events. DNPP “aims to educate, conserve, and promote Native Plant species vital to the culture and ecology of the Navajo Nation. DNPP aims to promote sustainable land practices and enhance biodiversity by integrating traditional knowledge with modern conservation efforts." DNPP was helpful in scouting the area we hiked to paint as well as providing details about local plants. Artists were able to snack before the hike at the picnic area near the trailhead. NNM provided all materials and briefly shared watercolor basics and NNM's upcoming events. To learn more about Diné Native Plants Program(DNPP), check out their website: https://dinenativeplantsprogram.my.canva.site/ and give the program a follow on Facebook & Instagram.
NNM’s Nihi Na’ach’ąąhí Á’té was featured in the 09/10/2026 issue of the Navajo Times!
