Mike Marshall, Tom Newbern and Jim Melchor's book entitled "Edenton's 1718 House, Mr. Ogilby's Tavern," which is about the oldest known house in NC, is now available on the Edenton Journal of Material Culture website (edentonjournal.com) and can be downloaded for free.
This book "Edenton’s 1718 House, Mr. Ogilby’s Tavern" was first published in hard-copy form in late 2024 and explores possible original sites of the oldest known house in North Carolina. Tree ring dating (dendrochronology) revealed the structure was constructed of timber cut after the growing season of 1718. The lot it sits on today is not where it was originally built, and that location has been a mystery since its discovery in 2013. Extensive research by the authors, documented in this book, provides a solution to that enigma and reveals that it was originally constructed by a joiner named Patrick Ogilby as a tavern on Edenton’s waterfront. The book also discusses in detail the structure itself, including the many changes made over its more than 300 years of evolution.
