Big news for our firefighters’ health!

Windsor Severance Fire Rescue has been awarded a $333,318 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) from FEMA. Over the next two years, this funding will cover our annual physicals and add advanced cancer screenings, including expanded blood work and full-body scans.

Cancer is one of the biggest health threats firefighters face. Catching problems early saves lives, and this grant helps us do that with FEMA covering the majority of the cost.

We’re always looking for outside funding to stretch every dollar further, and this is a great example of that work paying off. A huge thank you to Logistics Manager Chapman for his work with Front Line Mobile Health to write and submit this grant.

Taking care of the people who take care of you. πŸš’

October is Fire Prevention Month, and this year's theme is "Charge Into Fire Safetyβ„’: Safe Charging Is a Superpower."

Phones, laptops, e-bikes, scooters, power tools, vapes, toys. Lithium-ion batteries are in just about everything we own, and when they're damaged or charged the wrong way, they can overheat and start a fire fast.

A few simple habits make a big difference:

πŸ”Œ Use the charger and cord that came with your device, or one made for it
βœ… Buy products that are listed by a recognized testing lab (look for a mark like UL or ETL)
πŸ›οΈ Charge on a hard, flat surface, never on a bed, couch, or under a pillow
⚑ Unplug once it's fully charged
πŸšͺ Keep e-bikes and scooters from blocking your way out while they charge
♻️ Never toss batteries in the trash, take them to a battery recycling drop-off

Stop using a battery right away if it's swollen, hot, leaking, smells odd, or makes popping or hissing sounds. If it's safe to do so, move it away from anything that can burn and call 911.

Safe charging is a superpower, and everybody in the house can have it.

Today marks 25 years since the attacks of September 11, 2001, a day that changed the fire service forever.

343 firefighters from the FDNY gave their lives that day, running toward danger while others ran from it. It's why you'll see "Stay Back 343 Feet" on the back of fire trucks across the country, including ours. It's a daily reminder of their sacrifice, and a call for all of us to give our crews the space they need to do their jobs safely.

Alongside the 343, we lost 37 Port Authority Police officers, 23 NYPD officers, and 8 EMTs and paramedics that day. In the 25 years since, more than 400 additional FDNY members have died from 9/11-related illnesses tied to toxic exposure at Ground Zero, a reminder that the cost of that day is still being counted.

Today, we pause to honor all of them, along with the civilians we lost. We remember, we honor, and we carry their legacy forward every time we respond.

Our hearts are heavy today alongside our friends at Greeley Fire Department. The sudden loss of one of their firefighters is a blow that doesn't stay contained within one department's walls, it moves through this whole profession and this whole community.

If you've spent any time in the fire service, you know why. We train together, we respond to the same big calls, we see each other at conferences and academies and on the worst days of other people's lives. That makes us family, not in a loose or sentimental way, but in the way that means when one house grieves, we all feel it.

So instead of empty words, we want to say this plainly: we see you, Greeley. We're here for you, whatever that looks like in the weeks ahead, staffing a shift, showing up to a service, just picking up the phone. That's what this job asks of us, and we don't take it lightly.

To his family, his crew, and everyone who loved him: you are not carrying this alone.

It's almost Harvest Festival Parade time, and as has been a tradition for more than 70 years, WSFR Firefighters will be walking the parade route collecting money for MDA.

Since 1954, Firefighters across the country have collected critical funds in the community – one dollar at a time – as part of the Fill the Boot program to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). The partnership between MDA and the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) began when the IAFF signed a proclamation designating MDA as its charity of choice, vowing to continue raising awareness and funds to ensure effective treatments and therapies are found. The dollars raised through Fill the Boot fund MDA’s mission of empowering people living with neuromuscular disease to live longer, more independent lives.

You can donate cash, or scan the QR code on the boots. Let's show America how much our community cares and make this year the best ever!
