October 6, 2026 - Outdoor Warning Siren Testing Today at 11AM

Today will be our final routine outdoor warning siren test of the year.

Outdoor warning sirens are not routinely tested during the months of November through February. Regular testing will resume in March 2027.

As always, outdoor warning sirens are just one way to receive warning during severe weather. Make sure you have multiple ways to receive weather alerts and warnings.

Dispatch has received several reports of outdoor warning sirens activating in Atlanta. At this time there is no severe weather emergency and we are troubleshooting possible malfunctions that could cause the siren to sound on its own.

We will provide updates via this post once we have this issue resolved.

Kansas weather doesn’t always stick to one plan—so neither should yours!

As storms move through the area tonight, take a few minutes to make sure you’re ready for different weather possibilities.

• Heavy rain or flooding: Know which roads and low-lying areas to avoid. Never drive through flooded roadways.
• Severe storms: Know where your safe place is and be ready to move there quickly if a warning is issued.
• Power outages: Keep phones charged and have flashlights and other essentials easy to find.
• Changing conditions: Have more than one way to receive weather alerts and check the forecast.

You don’t have to know exactly what the weather will do to be prepared for what it could do. A few plans made ahead of time can make a big difference when conditions change.

Keep an eye on the weather over the next few days!

Several rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected across the area through Thursday. Some storms may produce heavy rainfall, which could lead to flooding—especially in low-lying and poor drainage areas.

A few quick reminders:
• Never drive through a flooded roadway. Turn Around, Don’t Drown.
• Be especially cautious at night, when it can be difficult to tell how deep water is over a road.
• Keep up with the forecast and be prepared to change your route if roads become flooded.

A little extra awareness goes a long way. Stay weather aware and stay safe! 🌧️

September is all about being ready before an emergency happens.

Make sure you have more than one way to receive emergency information:

• Sign up for Cowley Alerts
• Enable emergency alerts on your cellphone
• Keep a weather radio available
• Follow trusted local agencies
• Pay attention to local television and radio

During an emergency, accurate information can help you make the right decision at the right time. Don’t rely on only one source.

Preparedness Month is happening now—small steps can make a big difference.

Could your household manage on its own for several days following an emergency?

A basic emergency kit should include water, nonperishable food, medications, flashlights, batteries, phone chargers, first-aid supplies, important documents, and items needed by children or pets.

You don’t have to build the entire kit in one shopping trip. Add one or two items each week and store them together in an easy-to-reach location.

Preparedness doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated—it just has to begin.
