Large Law Enforcement Presence at Wingate University

Numerous law enforcement officers with the Wingate Police Department and the Union County Sheriff’s Office were called to the Wingate University campus earlier this evening to investigate reports of shots fired near the baseball field. Upon arrival, officers and other first responders located a man with a gunshot wound running around the baseball field where a live game was occurring. As first responders began providing emergency medical care to the man, he began to resist and fled on foot. The man was quickly subdued and transported to a local medical facility for emergency medical treatment where he remains in critical condition at this time.

Investigating officers have determined that this incident began after the man referred to above drove his truck off the roadway into a ditch near the baseball field. Once his truck became disabled, the man fired multiple gunshots inside the cab of his pick-up and injured himself as a direct result. After injuring himself, the man exited his truck and jumped over the fence onto the baseball field.

Although the identity of the man involved is being withheld at this time, we can inform the public that this man has no connection to the Wingate University campus and this is an isolated incident. Additional information on this incident will be released at a later time. Anyone with information pertaining to this case is asked to 911 or Union County Crime Stoppers at (704)283-5600.
