On Sunday, September 27, members of American Legion Giles-Luce Post 364 gathered at Allenville Cemetery to lay Larry Eckstein and his wife Darlene to rest together. It would have been their 74th wedding anniversary. Larry and Darlene eloped to Dubuque, Iowa on September 27, 1952, and were married 61 years until her passing in 2013.
Larry was a longtime member of our Post and one of the last living WWII veterans among us. He enlisted in the Army in 1944 and served with the Tenth Mountain Division, taking part in the assault on Riva Ridge in Italy and earning a Bronze Star. Back home, he worked at Kimberly-Clark and later drove semi-truck until he retired at age 86. He carried the flag in parades until he was 93, and he lived to be 101.
At the family's request, the Post offered a graveside tribute: a color guard, a memorial reading, three r***e volleys, Taps, and a closing prayer, following the priest's blessing. Thank you to every member who gave up their Sunday afternoon to honor a man who spent his life serving his country, his family, and this Post.
Rest in peace, Larry and Darlene. Together again, on the day they chose.
