To paraphrase an old saying, “There are liars, damn liars, and Dan Wilson.” Dan Wilson has a history of making false statements about his opponents, and he’s done it again in the campaign for HD 26A. There comes a time when the facts must stand, and now is that time. So let’s play a little game of fact or fiction with direct quotes from Dan Wilson.
DAN’S FICTION: “My opponent has been showing up for big pharma and other big corporate lobbyists and we need to make sure we elect someone that shows up for regular working families and not for some of the richest businesses in Minnesota.”
FACT: The bills I helped pass in the Minnesota legislature help working-class people, small businesses, farmers, veterans, and seniors. Rich folks won’t need to skip a meal to pay for their car tabs, but the rest of us really needed the $250 million reduction in car tab fees that I helped pass. The $125 million in property tax relief and $10 million for emergency supportive housing help working families and some of our most vulnerable citizens.
DAN’S FICTION: “I wanna make it easier to build more housing here, create more childcare, cheaper groceries, cheaper insurance.”
FACT: Those are all noble goals, but they take money. So which programs will Dan cut? Or how much will he raise our taxes? Also, does Dan realize that in today’s economy, grocery prices are influenced by the world market and insurance is a national issue? Does he really expect us to believe that one rep from Winona County can make our groceries and insurance cheaper? I don’t believe in fairy tales, and I don’t make false promises. I do, however, focus on what we can do to make life better for all of us in Winona County.
DAN’S FICTION: “It is harder to find a place to rent in Winona, MN than Manhattan”
FACT: Dan cites the Manhattan, NY vacancy rate at 1.87% and the Winona rate at 1.7%. But that’s only part of the story. According to the Weill Cornell Medicine Housing Report, landlords in Manhattan require an annual salary equal to 40 to 45 times the monthly rent. If landlords in Winona held to that same standard, someone renting a $750 apartment in Winona would need an annual salary of $ 30-34k, and all the apartments currently housing college students would be empty. Plus, Dan is ignoring the work that the city and county are doing to review zoning and land-use policies to encourage new housing development. Or does Dan want to take credit for their hard work once he is in office?
The people of Winona County deserve an honest representative who works hard for them at the Capitol. Please let me continue to be your voice at the Capitol and vote for me for HD 26A.
