This week is National Friends of the Library Week. The Friends of the Winona Public Library have actively supported the library since 1982! They've gone beyond the book sale and held many different fundraisers. They have funded various programs, books, and projects. The advocacy done for the library this year alone has been out of this world. Without them, we could not do what we do today.

There are many ways to support the Friends, including their fundraiser on Saturday. If you are interested in attending, go to https://winona.lib.mn.us/event/gothic-readings/. You can also become a Friends member by going to https://winona.lib.mn.us/friends/.

We were delighted to welcome musician Soojin Lee, who filled our space with the beautiful sounds of the gayageum—a traditional Korean zither with over 1,500 years of history. Its delicate, resonant tones felt especially magical in our beautiful historic building.

To make the experience even more special, participants had the chance to try playing the gayageum themselves at the end.

Join us this Saturday morning on our second floor at 10 AM for an incredible free performance by Dr. Soojin Lee! All ages are welcome!

This interactive program introduces participants to the gayageum instrument and the traditions of Korean music. Through a live performance, stories, and musical activities, participants will learn about the history and unique sound of the instrument, sing a Korean folk song, and have the opportunity to try playing the gayageum.

Dr. Soojin Lee is a professional performer on the gayageum (a traditional Korean string instrument) and teaches gayageum, Korean drumming, piano, and general music. She holds over 20 years of teaching experience from individual instruction to large groups. Her wide variety of experience includes teaching as a high school general music teacher in Korea, a private instructor of gayageum and piano, and a school residency of Korean music and drumming in U.S. schools.

Before coming to the United States, she worked for the National Korean traditional music high school as a gayageum and general music teacher. Soojin has her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Korean music from Seoul National University, South Korea and a Masters degree in Social Sciences from the University of California, Irvine. She received her PhD in music education at the University of Minnesota.
