First launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in libraries, bookstores, and schools, celebrates the freedom to read and pushes back against the censorship of words and ideas.

In 2025 alone, 5,668 books were documented as banned from libraries and an additional 920 books were censored through access restrictions such as relocation or requiring parental permission. This is both the highest number of titles censored in one year and the highest rate of challenges resulting in censorship from 1990–2025.

The most common justifications for censorship provided by complainants were false claims of illegal obscenity for minors; inclusion of LGBTQIA+ characters or themes; and covering topics of race, racism, equity, and social justice. And of these book challenges, 92% were initiated by pressure groups, government officials and decision makers while less than 3% of challenges originated from individual parents.

We’re excited to host the Hampton History Museum (VA) 1619: Arrival of the First Africans Traveling Exhibit here at the Library and on display through September 18.

Drawing on the latest research, this exhibit tells the story of the Africans’ home in Angola, how they came to be enslaved aboard a Spanish slave ship San Juan Bautista, the terrible 10,000 nautical mile voyage that brought them to Virginia, and their lives on the farms and plantations in the new colony.
