We have some exciting preservation news to share: our 1788 Gemeinhaus has received a $490,766 grant from the National Park Service's Semiquincentennial Grant Program. The money will pay for the second phase of restoration work on the building.

The Gemeinhaus is the only project in North Carolina to receive funding this cycle. The National Parks Service awarded $11.9 million to 26 projects in 15 states. The program pays for the physical preservation of properties listed in the National Register of Historic Places that are associated with the founding of the nation, in commemoration of the country's 250th anniversary.

The second phase of restoration will include a new roof, repairing and repointing leaking chimneys, repairs to windows, shutters, and doors, and extensive masonry repairs to the basement of the building.

This is the second Semiquincentennial grant awarded to Historic Bethabara Park. The first was awarded to the 1782 Potter's House, where construction work is underway. We will try to post some updates on that project soon!

The Geminhaus Rehabilitation at Historic Bethabara Park is supported by a Semiquincentennial grant from the Historic Preservation Fund administered by the National Park Service, Department of the Interior.

We are incredibly excited for the collections work that will be done with this Grant!

It will allow our archeological collection to become much more accessible to researchers and the public, unveiling new information about the Moravian settlers of Bethabara and their impact on Historic and Modern North Carolina.

The historic settlement of Bethabara dates to the 1750s and was the first Moravian settlement in North Carolina. Researchers and archaeologists from Wake Forest University and Historic Bethabara Park were recently awarded an NEH grant to help support the preservation and cataloging efforts of artifacts found at the site. Today is the 246th anniversary of the Battle of King's Mountain, a major turning point of the American Revolutionary War in the South. After the battle, a group of about 700 guards and prisoners of war marched through North Carolina to Bethabara, where they would stay from October 23rd to November 10th, 1780.
