Indigenous Peoples' Day -- The Four Federally Recognized Tribes hold federal recognition in Maine, forming the core of the modern Wabanaki Confederacy:

• Penobscot Nation: Headquartered on Indian Island near Old Town, their name means "place of the white rocks" (Panawahpskek).

• Passamaquoddy Tribe: Known as the "people of the pollock-spearing place," they maintain primary communities at Indian Island/Motahkokmikuk and Pleasant Point/Sipayik.

• Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians: Self-identified as the Wolastoqiyik ("people of the Saint John River"), their tribal center is located along the Meduxnekeag River near Houlton.

• Mi'kmaq Nation: Also referred to as Micmac, their name means "our kin-friends" or "people of the red earth," with headquarters in Aroostook County.
