Yolo County Black History Month Celebrating the rich history, culture, and contributions of the Black community in Yolo County.

This February, join us in honoring the past, present, and future of Black excellence. Yolo County Black History Month is a collaboration between local agencies, schools, and organizations to host a month-long series of events and displays. The program includes quilt exhibits that highlight Black history and culture, a special launch event, and other community activities. The goal is to bring everyone together, educate people about Black history, and offer valuable experiences for students throughout Yolo County.

A remarkable piece of Yolo County history is coming to the stage.

Basil Campbell rose from enslavement to become the wealthiest Black landowner in Superior California. Now, Sacramento playwright and director Anthony D’Juan is bringing his story to life in "Superior California", a new work of historical fiction inspired by Campbell’s life.

The staged reading, presented by Studio Creatch, is free and open to the public.

The story was first uncovered through research in local newspapers and Yolo County archives by Studio Creatch co-founder J.R. Wolfe while pursuing an MFA at UC Davis.

Limited seating is available, so early arrival is encouraged.
