▪️The City of Winterset is preparing for the potential of significant rainfall tonight through Thursday night into early Friday morning.
▪️The National Weather Service is forecasting 2 to 5 inches of rain, with localized totals that could reach 6 inches.
▪️City departments have coordinated preemptively placing pumps and equipment throughout the community, and road barricades are ready for rapid deployment if street closures become necessary.
▪️Residents should anticipate the possibility of localized street flooding and overwhelmed storm sewers.
▪️If you encounter water over a road or a barricaded street, do not drive through. Turn around, don't drown.
▪️If your property has experienced basement water or storm sewer backups in past events, please take precautionary steps now. Move valuables off basement floors, check sump pumps to ensure they are working, confirm that discharge lines carry water outside and away from the foundation, and clear debris from private drains where it can safely be done. Taking action now can reduce damage and help crews focus on critical needs.
▪️City staff will continue to monitor conditions and respond as needed. Please remain alert and follow updates from the City of Winterset and the National Weather Service.
