Gusty winds of 35 to 45 mph are expected across Iowa on Friday. Behind the cold front, these strong winds will keep conditions feeling crisp and brisk throughout the day.

10/15/2026

🌧️ Rain through most of the day Thursday across IA with cooler air settling across the state.
🌬️ Cooler and windy on Friday. We start the day in the upper 30s to low 40s and only warm into the low 50s in the afternoon. Strong north wind at 35-40 mph will make it feel even colder!

10/15/2026

A post-frontal cold air mass will increase the likelihood of the season's first frost this weekend. Northern Iowa carries the highest probability, with decreasing chances extending southward.

10/14/2026

Expect mostly cloudy skies today, with shower and thunderstorm chances picking up late this evening and lasting through Thursday. Skies will clear on Friday behind a departing cold front, making way for a breezy end to the week.

🥶🥀 Cold is on the way! Most of Iowa will see lows in the 30s on Saturday morning. Frost can form with temperatures to around 37 degrees, something most of Iowa has not yet experienced this fall. The map below shows the average date of the first fall 37 degree temperature.

Though we have some rain chances in the forecast for midweek, dry weather returns by the end of the week and looks to stick around for quite some time. Temperatures are trending to be slightly above normal for mid-to-late October.

10/12/2026

🚨🌡️The record high temperature for October 11 in Des Moines has been Broken!🌡️🚨
The high temperature in Des Moines today was 88 degrees, which we hit at 3:18PM this afternoon. The old record was 86 which was set in 1962, and then tied in 1962 and 2024.

10/12/2026

Today marks the final day of the widespread unseasonably warm weather pattern in Central Iowa, with afternoon high temperatures forecast to reach the mid-80s to low 90s. A gradual transition to more seasonal conditions is expected to occur through the work week, especially by Friday where the highs will only reach into the 50s.

10/10/2026

Above average temperatures through the 80s, paired with gusty winds, dry conditions and cured cropland will result in elevated fire weather conditions today, especially over western and northern Iowa. Extra caution should be taken when operating farm equipment, as any fire starts in these conditions can quickly spread and become uncontrollable. Stay safe out there!
