📚 From systems alignment to classroom impact!

Continuing the work from ALLSA (Advancing Leadership for Literacy & Systems Alignment), School-Based Literacy Coach Tristan Phillips facilitated a collaborative session at Danielsville Elementary with teachers and leaders, joined by Regional Literacy Coach Courtney Kerlin. Building on conversations about the various assessments administered and their purposes, the team explored how assessment data can drive instructional decisions. Grade-level teams shared ideas to strengthen alignment, then took a deeper look at their upcoming module assessment to identify the knowledge and skills students need for success. By connecting assessment to standards-based instruction, educators are working together to ensure teaching is intentional, aligned, and responsive to student needs! 💡📖

Kathy Harris, NEGA RESA Regional Literacy Coach, partnered with Katie Collins, Dove Creek Elementary School Literacy Coach, to design differentiated Science of Writing professional learning specifically for second- and third-grade teachers.
Teachers explored practical strategies aligned to The Writing Revolution that help students move from developing strong sentences to expanding, combining, and elaborating on their ideas with greater clarity.
The learning then moved directly into classrooms! Katie modeled the strategies with students, providing teachers an opportunity to see the instructional practices in action. We followed the modeling with a collaborative debrief, examining student responses, effective instructional moves, and opportunities for continued implementation.
Through this cycle of professional learning → modeling → reflection → application, teachers strengthened their understanding of explicit writing instruction and left with practical tools and increased confidence to support students in becoming more independent, thoughtful, and skilled writers.

👑 The Behavior Queen was in the house at NEGA RESA! 👑

We had a fantastic day of professional learning with Amie Dean, The Behavior Queen!

Educators from across our RESA came together to explore practical classroom management strategies, gain valuable resources, and learn new ways to build positive classroom environments while addressing challenging behaviors.

Amie brought her energy, expertise, and real-world experience, equipping educators with strategies they can take right back to their classrooms and put into action!

A big thank you to Amie and all the educators who joined us for a great day of learning and collaboration! 💙

NEGA RESA Leader Academy Cohort B continued exploring who we are as leaders by identifying our core values and examining what happens when there is a values gap—and how that gap impacts the leader, the team, and the organization.

We also explored the power of influence, recognizing how our actions and behaviors shape others and how others influence us.

Through Moir’s Phases of the School Year, participants considered how understanding the seasons teachers experience throughout the year can help them provide intentional, responsive support.

A special thank you to Dr. Michael Williams, Superintendent of Banks County Schools, and Mr. Justin Mewborn, Assistant Principal at Jackson County, for sharing your leadership insights and experiences!

Leadership growth starts with self-awareness and a commitment to positively influence those we serve.

NEGA RESA Leader Academy Cohort A spent time reflecting on what they over-attend to and under-attend to in their leadership.

Leaders don’t have to announce what matters most. What they consistently give attention to, reinforce, and repeat sends a powerful message about what they value.

Laurie Allison and Jean Triplett helped participants explore their Highlands Ability Battery results to better understand their natural abilities and how those abilities show up in their daily work.

Leadership growth begins with self-awareness, intentional reflection, and a willingness to examine the impact we have on others. What we pay attention to gets results!

🚀 Building coaching capacity. Building teacher capacity. Building impact!

RLLC Jennifer Adams and RLCs Courtney Kerlin and Kathy Harris facilitated an energizing session with Madison County school-based literacy coaches focused on growing a strong coaching culture.

Coaches reflected on their current coaching culture, unpacked light vs. heavy coaching through real-world scenarios, and explored Jim Knight’s Impact Cycle. They then dove into the Identify stage by observing a coaching cycle in action, noticing intentional coaching moves, and planning next steps.

The result? Coaches left prepared, energized, and ready to take action as they begin or continue their first coaching cycles because when we invest in coaches, we build teacher capacity and create meaningful change for students. 📚✨ RLLC

🌟 Coaching in Action: From Observation to Immediate Impact!

Kathy Harris, NEGA RESA Regional Literacy Coach, partnered with Social Circle Elementary School and District administrators and coaches, along with SOR for More Trainer Rebecca Loera, to observe UFLI instruction in action across classrooms.

Through classroom observations, collaborative conversations, and immediate, actionable feedback, teachers had the opportunity to reflect on their practice, celebrate strengths, and identify ways to continue strengthening the delivery of explicit, systematic foundational skills instruction.

This is professional learning at its best—learning alongside teachers, providing feedback in the moment, and continually refining instruction to positively impact student learning.

And these teachers and students? Absolute ROCK STARS! ⭐📚 Their engagement, hard work, and commitment to growth were evident throughout every classroom!

✏️ Building Strong Writers from the Start!

Kathy Harris, NEGA RESA Regional Literacy Coach/ELA Specialist; Jennifer Adams, NEGA RESA Regional Literacy Leadership Coach; and Peggy Terrell led engaging professional learning focused on K–1 Emergent Writing.

Teachers and coaches strengthened their understanding of how our youngest learners develop as writers while exploring practical, research-based strategies they can immediately apply in their classrooms.

🎯 Session Objectives included:
• Understanding the stages of writing and spelling development
• Exploring the critical connections between speech, phonics, and writing
• Learning sentence-level strategies that strengthen students’ writing skills
• Building stamina, independence, and confidence as young writers

The goal goes beyond teaching students what to write. By understanding how writing develops and intentionally connecting oral language, phonics, spelling, and sentence construction, educators are better equipped to meet students where they are and provide the scaffolds needed to move them forward.

The impact? More confident teachers. More independent writers. Stronger literacy foundations from the very beginning. ✏️📚
