CWD is still monitoring lake water quality during October. Yesterday the team went to Little Cobbossee, pictured, where the water clarity was a little below our goal of 3 meters, and there was no oxygen below 5 meters as the lake has not turned over yet. Upper Narrows Pond and Jamies Pond also were still thermally stratified and water clarity was greater than 6 meters, measured as Secchi disk transparency.

The autumn water level season has started. CWD tries to prolong the boating and recreation season into the early fall - the drought is not helping this year. It is also the time to control runoff from fall storms - easy so far! Lastly, we initiate lake drawdowns for lower water in winter. Some of them are starting later than usual because there is less water in the lakes. In the case of Pleasant Pond, the drawdown has already started and will be lower than usual by early October, causing people to take their boats out early, hopefully already done. See the latest CWD water levels report.

Lake levels in the Cobbossee Watershed are in a normal range for July. Lack of rainfall is causing unavoidable declines in lake levels. Today's weekly drought report indicates the watershed is still designated as "abnormally dry", but areas immediately east are now in "moderate drought". See the watershed precipitation and lake level details in the attached reports.

Summer is here and as the Cobbossee Watershed District’s June water levels report shows, there is adequate water in the lakes. However, June precipitation has been below average and the months ahead will be a time of high evaporation. Lake levels normally decline as summer progresses unless rainfall is excessive. Questions? It was an aptly pleasant day yesterday for CWD to monitor the water quality of Pleasant Pond. The Secchi disk transparency (water clarity) of Upper Pleasant (shown in photo) was 3.0 meters, or 10 feet. We measured 3.3 m in the main body of Pleasant Pond. The water temperature below the surface was 66 degrees F.
