Wiscasset Police Officers Honored at Maine Chiefs of Police Association Annual Awards Banquet

Chair Sarah Whitfield, Selectman Bill Maloney, and Town
Manager Dennis Simmons recently attended the Maine Chiefs of Police Association annual awards banquet, where three members of the Wiscasset Police Department were recognized for exceptional service.

Officer Hunter Farrell and Officer Jonathan Barnes each received a Life Saving Award in recognition of their actions during incidents in which their response helped save a life, including our own Chief Hesseltine. These awards reflect the professionalism, training, and commitment that Wiscasset officers bring to their work
every day.

Sgt. Perry Hatch was also recognized with a surprise award honoring his 40 years of outstanding contributions to law enforcement. Sgt. Hatch’s long career represents a
remarkable record of public service, dedication, and commitment to the safety of the community.

“The Town of Wiscasset is proud of Officer Farrell, Officer Barnes, and Sgt. Hatch,” said Town Manager Dennis Simmons. “Their recognition by the Maine Chiefs of Police Association is well deserved. It is especially meaningful that Wiscasset was the only
agency with multiple award winners, which speaks highly of the professionalism and dedication of our Police Department.”

The Town extends its congratulations to all three officers and thanks them for their continued service to Wiscasset and the broader law enforcement community.

UPDATE: It was brought to my attention that my stating "approximately" 80% of arrests are dismissed is not an accurate percentage. I am in no way trying to send out any false information, so the wording has been changed until an accurate number is provided from the courts.

On New Year’s Eve, a male subject was arrested for Operating Under the Influence, Refusing to Submit to Arrest, Terrorizing, Criminal Threatening, and Carrying a Concealed Weapon. During the arrest, the subject warned the arresting officer to back down and release him or face the consequences. After being taken into custody, he stated that he was a local resident, knew where the officer lived, and threatened that upon his release from jail he would go to the officer’s home and kill his children.

Despite the severity and credibility of these threats, the subject was released by the court on unsecured bail, requiring no monetary payment. This decision once again highlights a troubling pattern within District 6, where the court system and the District Attorney appear indifferent to the safety of the general public and the first responders tasked with protecting them.

Instead of prioritizing public safety and accountability, the system continues to make decisions that place the public, officers and their families at risk. This is not an isolated incident. Officers in District 6 routinely face threats, assaults, and intimidation with little to no meaningful consequences for offenders. When a large number of arrests are dismissed before ever reaching a courtroom, the courts are failing the citizens of Maine.

As Law enforcement professionals we hold ourselves to a high standards of conduct and accountability. It is reasonable, and necessary, to expect the same level of responsibility from the rest of the criminal justice system.

Rest assured despite the broken system, the officers in the Wiscasset Police Association will continue to ensure we protect the residents of Wiscasset. We choose to continue to serve and protect despite the threats and lack of support. For all those who choose to support and stand behind us, we are truly thankful.

We wholeheartedly echo the Sheriff's Association and others who have opposed this. This will endanger the lives of Maine's citizens and law enforcement.

Governor Mills will allow LD 1971 to become law. This law will tear apart relationships between local, county, state and federal law enforcement. In rural Maine, an area always overlooked by the ideological left, Maine police officers and Border Patrol regularly work together keeping those communities safe.

This decision is an absolute slap in the face to every law-enforcement officer in the State of Maine. It’s clear Governor Mills is more concerned with appeasing her progressive base to win a primary, than she is about the safety of Mainers. (Copied)
