Edward J. Ryan (“Uncle Ed”)

Edward J. Ryan, affectionately known as “Uncle Ed,” age 83, of Waterbury, Connecticut, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at the West Haven VA Medical Center.

Ed was born on March 7, 1943, in Waterbury, Connecticut, the son of the late John J. Ryan and Hanora (Thompson) Ryan. A proud U.S. Army veteran, he served his country honorably while stationed in Korea during the Vietnam era.

Throughout his life, Ed was known for his strong work ethic and willingness to help others. He worked for many years as both an electrician and a security guard before retiring. A true jack of all trades, he enjoyed collecting vintage electronics, searching for treasures at tag sales, and could fix just about anything.

Ed was also a dedicated member of the Grange community, earning the distinction of Grange member and serving for many years as Lecturer of the Wolcott Grange. He took great pride in his Irish heritage and lived a life guided by hard work, integrity, and humility.

Known affectionately to everyone as “Uncle Ed,” he was a no-nonsense, serious man for much of his life. That changed when his great-nieces and great-nephews were born. They quickly became the center of his world, giving him a renewed sense of joy and purpose. To them, he was the ultimate best buddy, always ready to spend time together, share his wisdom, or lend a helping hand. Ed loved his family deeply and lived an incredibly meaningful life. Everyone who knew him benefited from his kindness, wisdom, honor, and unwavering integrity.

Ed will be lovingly remembered by his brother, Jack Ryan of California; his sister, Mavourneen Mowad of Waterbury, Connecticut; his nieces and nephews, Sean (Karen) Mowad, Jonathan Ryan, Diana (Gaurav) Arora, and Steve (Jennifer) Ryan; and his beloved great-nieces and great-nephews: Sameer Arora, Makendra Mowad, Brianna Mowad, Parker Mowad, Brody Mowad, Colin Ryan, Aubrey Mowad, Karina Arora, Riley Ryan, Genevieve Mowad, and Kaisyn Mowad.

Arrangements: Ed’s burial is going to be held privately and at the convenience of the family at the Connecticut State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown, Connecticut. Chase Parkway Memorial, The Albini Family Funeral Home, 430 Chase Parkway, Waterbury, Connecticut, has been entrusted with handing Ed’s funeral arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Ed's memory to:
