Hello everyone, and welcome back to another 🐍!

Today we are going to mix it up a bit and ask for your help. Meet our new Eastern Rat snake, who currently does not have a name, and we want your help choosing one. Below are a few names that we have in mind so far and the significance behind them.

- Arbor: since they are an arboreal species.
- Lute: derived from the Latin word luteus, which means "yellow".
- Crinkle: this name comes from the "crinkling" behavior that rat snakes exhibit when threatened to try and make themselves look like a stick.
- Theo/ Thero: this name comes from their genus name Pantherophis.
- Dandy: derived from dandelion, hence their yellow coloration.

Let us know in the comments which name you like best, or let us know your own suggestions!

🪲 Creature Feature: Asian Longhorned Beetle

The Asian longhorned beetle (Anoplophora glabripennis) is an invasive wood-boring insect that attacks a variety of hardwood trees, including maples, elms, birches, and willows. Their larvae tunnel deep into tree trunks and branches, disrupting the flow of water and nutrients and eventually killing the tree.

Learning to identify and report invasive species like the Asian longhorned beetle helps protect our forests and communities. If you suspect a sighting, report it through EDDMapS.org. 🌳🪲

We’re so grateful for our amazing community partners like Camden County Animal Control! Thank you for a great lesson with our YETies!

Earlier this month Camden County Animal Control had a great time presenting to the Camden County Cooperative Extension 4-H Youth Emergency Team. Students learned about safe animal handling, checking for microchips, what to do when they spot a stray, basic illnesses, ordinances, and more. Blaze came along for the visit and was a huge hit!

The Youth Emergency Team is open to students in grades 7–12 and teaches the basics of emergency preparedness and response, using FEMA’s Teen CERT curriculum and 4-H philosophies. This program is a partnership between Kingsland Fire Rescue and Camden County 4-H.
