Even with our recent rain, we have now started to enter the fall brush fire season. With high winds and dry conditions, fire dangers are starting to climb. Please hold off on burning through the weekend into next Monday while these conditions persist.

The map above displays forecasted fire danger across North Carolina using the Adjective Rating, a National Fire Danger Rating System parameter that describes environmental conditions affecting the potential for wildfire ignition and spread. Our hearts go out to Durham Fire Department and everyone affected by this tragic incident. Please keep them in your prayers.

We are heartbroken to share that Firefighter Andrew Brokes died in the line of duty this morning while searching for victims inside the building at 410 Marly Drive.

Firefighter Brokes, who joined the Durham Fire Department on May 5, 2025, served the Durham community with dedication, courage, and a deep commitment to the residents of the Bull City.

“This is a heartbreaking loss for our department, the family, and the entire community,” said Durham Fire Chief Robert J. Zoldos II. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones and his colleagues, and we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during this unimaginably difficult time. The department is standing with and supporting his family in every possible way.”

Two other firefighters were injured during the incident and were taken to Duke Medical Center. Both have received care and are expected to make full recoveries.

This loss is felt across our entire department. Firefighters step into unpredictable situations every day in service to others, and Firefighter Brokes embodied that calling with honor.

We know our community is grieving alongside us. If you wish to share your condolences or messages of support, they will be received with gratitude by our department and by those who knew and loved Firefighter Brokes.

In the coming days, we will share more information about how we will honor his service and support the firefighters involved in this incident.

Thank you, Durham, for surrounding our DFD family with care during this profoundly difficult time.

Earlier today, Woodfin Police responded to a stabbing which occurred at the intersection of Old Home Rd and Barton Rd. Witnesses observed a man assaulting a woman, inside and outside of a burgundy 2000 Mercury Mountaineer. The suspect fled the scene in the victim’s Mountaineer prior to police arrival. Officers found the victim, stabbed multiple times about her body. She was rushed to a local hospital and into surgery, suffering from life threatening injuries. She is now recovering in stable condition. The investigation revealed the victim and suspect knew each other well. This was not a random attack.
This afternoon, deputies of the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office located the Mountaineer, conducted a traffic stop, and took Louis Williams Jones Jr into custody. He has been charged by Woodfin Police with attempted first-degree murder and larceny of a vehicle.
We would like to extend our thanks to our partner law enforcement agencies for their aid and assistance today. Weaverville Police Department responded with our officers to the initial call and helped gather critical information that led to identification of the suspect. Members of the Sheriff’s Office didn’t just apprehend the suspect, but were with our officers and detective throughout the day, providing investigative and crime scene support. We are fortunate to have such great working relationships with other law enforcement agencies in the area.
