There’s a seat for you.

Some of the best times at the firehouse happen sitting around the table. A pizza, a few stories, plenty of laughs, lots of camaraderie.

The firehouse is more than training and answering calls. It’s the people you train with, serve alongside, and get to know along the way.

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to be part of it, pull up a chair.

Let’s talk about lithium-ion batteries.

You probably use them every day without even thinking about it. They power phones, laptops, power tools, e-bikes, scooters, and a lot of the rechargeable devices around your home.

So why are we talking about them?
When a lithium-ion battery is damaged, overheats or isn’t charged properly, it can catch fire quickly and, in some cases, explode. These fires can spread fast, which is why a few simple habits at home really matter.

Here are a few ways to protect yourself and your family:
-Always use the correct charger for your device.
-Never leave batteries charging unattended or overnight.
-Keep e-bikes, scooters and charging batteries away from exits.
-Stop using a battery if it starts swelling, overheating, smoking or smelling strange.
-If a battery catches fire, get everyone out and call 911.

Lithium-ion batteries are part of everyday life. Knowing how to use and charge them safely can help prevent an emergency before it starts.

Stay safe, Woodmere.

Shanah Tovah, Woodmere!

As Rosh Hashanah begins, we wish a happy, healthy, and sweet new year to everyone in our community who is celebrating, including members of our own department and their families.

May the year ahead bring peace, good health, and plenty of time with the people who matter most.

From all of us at the Woodmere Fire Department, we wish you a safe and sweet Rosh Hashanah.

The firefighter in the photo is kneeling down, his uniform caked with dirt as he desperately drinks water pouring out of an open hydrant. All around him is the horror of that day — bent steel, piles of debris, toxic dust and just a sliver of blue sky.

Michael Sauer was 34 and an off-duty volunteer firefighter for the Woodmere Fire Department when he and a fellow volunteer who was also with the FDNY, went into the city to help at Ground Zero on 9/11.

Yoni Brook, a 19-year-old NYU student and a stringer for The Washington Post, had just gotten out of class when he rushed to Ground Zero to capture scenes from the destruction of the terror attacks.

Twenty-five years later, the photographer and his subject met on a beach at Point Lookout Friday, then went to Sauer's house in Woodmere, and recalled the day together.

Twenty-five years later, we pause to remember the first responders and thousands of innocent people who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.

For the fire service, this day will always carry a weight that is difficult to put into words. We remember the sacrifice, the courage, and the families who have carried that loss for 25 years.

Their memory lives on in firehouses across New York and in the men and women who continue to serve their communities today.

We remember them.
We honor them.
We will never forget.

After joining the Woodmere Fire Department, one of our members trained to become an EMT. Since then, the experience has given him more than just a certification. It has helped him gain clinical experience, make connections in the medical field, and get a better understanding of where he may want his career to go.

For young adults especially, volunteering can be a chance to learn real skills and gain experience you can use as you figure out what comes next.
