🚒 JOINT TRAINING WITH WHITE TAIL RIDGE VFD 🚒

Tonight, members of Shady Grove Volunteer Fire Department are training alongside our partners at White Tail Ridge Volunteer Fire Department.

Tonight’s training is focused on Scene Size-Up — one of the most critical steps in establishing a safe, organized, and effective response to an emergency.

Crews are working together to reinforce the importance of identifying hazards, evaluating the situation, determining the resources needed, establishing an initial incident plan, and maintaining firefighter and public safety throughout the incident.

Joint training opportunities like this allow departments to strengthen communication, build teamwork, and continue developing the skills needed to work effectively together when responding to emergencies in our communities.

We appreciate White Tail Ridge VFD for continuing to train alongside us and for the commitment their members show to preparing for the calls we may face together.

What an honor!

What an honor!

Yesterday our DETCCA High School Fire Academy cadets got to meet 3 New York Firefighters who responded to the 9/11 World Trade Center attacks 25 years ago. This was a great experience and one that is sure to make a lasting impression.

We appreciate these 3 Heros for taking time to visit with us!! Deep East Texas College & Career Academy Kilgore College Fire Academy Jasper County Emergency Services District # 4

OFFICIAL STATEMENT — SHADY GROVE VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT

The Shady Grove Volunteer Fire Department has formally met as a department to review and discuss the proposed policies recently presented by Tyler County.

After careful consideration and discussion, the Shady Grove Volunteer Fire Department has unanimously decided to oppose the proposed policies in their current form.

Our position is not based on opposition to cooperation or progress within Tyler County. Rather, we believe that policies affecting fire protection, emergency response, resources, personnel, and public safety should be thoroughly reviewed and carefully considered by all fire departments affected by those policies.

We respectfully believe the proposed policies should be reviewed, discussed, and revised as necessary until a solution can be reached that has the support and agreement of all participating fire departments. The men and women serving our communities deserve to have their concerns heard, and the communities we protect deserve policies that strengthen—not potentially hinder—their emergency services.

DEPARTMENTAL AUTHORITY & MEMBERSHIP

The Shady Grove Volunteer Fire Department also believes that the vetting, selection, acceptance, and approval of members should remain solely at the discretion and authority of each individual fire department.

Each department understands the needs, standards, expectations, and operational requirements of its own organization and community. Decisions regarding who is accepted as a member and entrusted to serve within that department should therefore remain with the department’s established leadership and membership processes.

We believe maintaining this departmental discretion is essential to preserving local accountability, operational integrity, leadership authority, and the ability of each fire department to determine who is suitable to serve within its organization.

REQUEST TO THE COMMISSIONERS COURT

For these reasons, the Shady Grove Volunteer Fire Department respectfully requests that the Tyler County Commissioners Court table consideration of the proposed policies until further notice, allowing additional time for meaningful discussion, review, and collaboration among the County and all affected fire departments.

Our greatest concern is ensuring that no policy or administrative decision results in a reduction, limitation, or lack of access to the personnel, equipment, funding, or other resources necessary to provide effective emergency response and protect the citizens of Tyler County.

We believe decisions of this magnitude should not move forward without adequate consideration of the concerns expressed by the fire departments responsible for providing emergency services to the citizens of Tyler County.

PUBLIC PARTICIPATION

We also encourage members of the public who have questions, concerns, or opinions regarding these proposed policies to attend the Tyler County Commissioners Court meeting on Monday at 10:00 AM at the Tyler County Courthouse and make their voices heard.

For those who wish to address the Commissioners Court, sign-up to speak begins at 9:00 AM.

Your participation and involvement in matters affecting emergency services and public safety are important. We encourage everyone to become informed, attend the meeting if they are able, and respectfully share their thoughts and concerns with their elected county officials.

The Shady Grove Volunteer Fire Department remains committed to working cooperatively with Tyler County, the Commissioners Court, and our fellow fire departments to find a solution that places public safety, emergency preparedness, local departmental authority, and the continued strength of our volunteer fire services first.

Celebrating One of Our Own 🚒

As a new school year begins, we are incredibly proud to recognize Madison Hicks as she takes on an exciting new challenge—while continuing her education, she will also be attending the Kilgore/Jasper ESD #4 Fire Academy!

Madison has already shown a strong commitment to learning, serving others, and being part of our fire service family. Her decision to pursue formal fire academy training is another step forward in building the knowledge, skills, and experience needed to become an even stronger firefighter and community servant.

We know balancing school and fire academy training will take dedication, hard work, and perseverance—and we have no doubt that Madison is up for the challenge.

From all of us at Shady Grove VFD, congratulations, Madison Hicks! We are proud of you and excited to watch you grow throughout this next chapter. We will be behind you every step of the way!

🔥 Keep learning. Keep training. Keep serving.
🚒 We’re proud to call you one of our own!
