🌾⚠️ A heart-stopping sight from the 1950 harvest season!

This snapshot might give local farm families a bit of anxiety just looking at it!

In October 1950, more than 250 Future Farmers of America (FFA) students across Wayne County launched their second annual countywide harvest safety campaign. Their mission? Help farmers avoid serious—and sometimes life-changing—accidents during corn-picking season.

In this staged “DON’T” photo, Paul Howard and Tom Williams demonstrate the danger of reaching into a corn picker’s snapping rolls to clear a clog while the machinery is running. Those rolls could pull cornstalks through at 12 feet per second—far faster than a person could react!

The danger was very real. The campaign highlighted the story of Jay Buchwalter of Dalton, who lost his left arm above the wrist in 1946 when his glove was caught in the snapping rolls.

FFA students from Wooster, Dalton, Orrville, Smithville, West Salem, Apple Creek, and Shreve visited local farms to spread the word. Their message was simple:

“Play it safe. It’s better to lose a minute and save an arm.”

The rule? Always shut off the tractor engine and disengage the power take-off (PTO) before attempting to clear a clog.

Don't miss an opportunity to hear from our very own Local Library Champion! Thursday (October 22nd) at 7 p.m. at the Main Library in Wooster.

Join us Thursday, October 22 at 7:00 for our annual meeting and presentation!

The Wooster Friends of the Library will honor Barry Romich, recipient of the 2025 Local Library Champion Award, during the annual meeting and program on Thursday, October 22, beginning at 7 pm in the Wooster Public Library meeting room.

Through his foundation, Romich has helped Wayne County libraries fund 3D printers, laser engravers, and other hardware for their Creation Stations. The Romich Foundation has also donated solar panels for the library bookmobile, and it was instrumental in the development of the Joyful Cafe in the Wooster Public Library.

The program will follow a brief meeting of the Wooster Friends of the Library. Refreshments will be available.

Everyone is welcome to attend. We look forward to spending time with all of our Friends!

Pheasants, wild turkeys, pine trees, and fishing lakes? Just another day for the Way-Ho Conservation Club!

Founded on August 29, 1949, the club brought together local conservation enthusiasts with a mission to support “any project aiming at conservation improvements” in Wayne and Holmes counties. Around 300 people signed up at its very first meeting!

Their projects included raising pheasants, planting thousands of pine trees, and even bringing wild turkeys back to the area. In 1950, they purchased 26 wild turkey chicks from South Carolina, hoping to reestablish a local population. It had reportedly been about 85 years since wild turkeys were last seen in Wayne County!

🎣 The club also worked to improve local fishing, fertilizing and restocking O’Dell and Long Lakes. Our featured photos, taken October 30, 1950, capture the fish-restocking efforts. The fish were acclimated to the lake’s temperature while still on the truck before being released into the water.

By 1952, the club had reported 47,000 pine tree transplants, 1,860 pheasant eggs, and plenty of other conservation projects. We lose track of the group after that, but its ambitious beginnings make for a fascinating piece of local history!
