The Friends of the Worcester Public Library are marking their 70th anniversary with a generous $50,000 donation toward the new Great Brook Valley Branch, expected to be completed in 2027.

Mayor Joseph M. Petty also presented four Keys to the City to longtime Friends volunteers, each of whom has served the organization for more than 20 years, Terry, Jeanne, Dave, and Chris.

From helping fund the Main Library decades ago to supporting the next generation of library spaces, the Friends continue to make a lasting difference in our community. Thank you for 70 years of making WPL stronger!

There are 30 new bestsellers, six new movies, one new audiobook, two new music CDs, 116 new children's books, and 181 other new books.

The new bestsellers this week include "The Witch," "Partita," and "EA Sports Madden NFL 27 [Nintendo Switch 2]." The new movies this week include "Pressure," "The Goonies," and "Ready or Not 2: Here I Come."

Our next Craft Swap will be held on Saturday, October 31, from 12-3 PM in the First Floor Ellipse. Declutter your craft stash or pick up some new supplies at our Craft Swap! Portable craft supplies and tools such as yarn, beads, scrapbook paper, knitting needles, sewing notions, floral décor, clean paint brushes, and googly eyes are welcome. Materials must be clean and in good condition (new or gently used). You don’t need to bring something to take something from the swap and craft material donations will only be accepted on the day of the swap.

The year 2026 marks the 70th anniversary of our beloved Friends of the Worcester Public Library. Since the American Library Association and libraries throughout the country are celebrating National Friends of Libraries Week from October 18 - 24, 2026, we would like to take you back in time and share the history of our very own Friends! Today's post (link in comments) is the final one in our three-part series and will focus on the various ways in which the Friends raised money to help the library.

Since the American Library Association and libraries throughout the country are celebrating National Friends of Libraries Week from October 18 - 24, 2026, we would like to take you back in time and share the history of our very own Friends! As we previously wrote in the first post of this three-part series, the Friends aid the library through advocacy, raising money through membership fees and fundraising events, and sponsoring programs and library items that the library's budget does not fund. Today's post will focus on the many ways that the Friends have sponsored library programs, initiatives, and equipment over the years. Link to the post is in the comments section.
