This past weekend we celebrated five years since our chapter’s revival with our monthly General Meeting, candlepin bowling, and special anniversary buttons!
The old Worcester DSA effectively became inactive in 2020, and we decided to base the revived chapter’s fifth anniversary on its first renewed monthly General Meeting (April 11, 2021) because of member democracy’s central role in our chapter and GMs being its best expression
GMs are where we deliberate on and direct chapter work, and this month we debated a bylaws amendment, heard from our committees and DSA National Co-Chair Megan Romer, and got a finance update and chapter history presentation
Our anniversary button was inspired by a punny union button from the 2021-22 St. Vincent nurses strike, which our chapter rebuilt around with labor solidarity work, and by candlepin bowling, a classic working class New England sport invented in Worcester
12,000 workers once bowled in candlepin leagues at area employers like Norton and the then-Memorial Hospital, and after our General Meeting, we of course went out bowling (and recruited a new member!)
A few things that got us to 5 years:
📈 We’re a local group of a nationwide org
🫱🏼🫲🏽 We focus on struggle and engage with specific ones, but we’re not single-issue or open only to certain workers
📝 The members run this chapter and set collective action
🌹 We’re building a real political alternative for socialism
Don’t wait another five years — join us in the country’s largest socialist organization!

As we approach 5 years since the historic strike at St. Vincent’s hospital, hundreds of MNA nurses across 5 hospitals launched info pickets to demand fair contracts from UMass!🪧
Tons of DSAers walked the line with nurses, and we joined all 5 pickets across Central Mass!
UMass has spent the last several years building new hospital wings and paying millions to its president and CEO
Meanwhile, nurses aren’t asking for much: safe staffing and wages that actually keep up with their cost of living
We know whose side we’re on✊
