The Osgood-Bradley Company developed this piece of property in 1835 to manufacture carriage cars
for the Boston and Worcester (later Albany) Railroad. The company is considered to have been the
oldest car factory in America. The original facility covered more than an acre of land and the
company employed approximately 120 men. During the Civil War, the company ceased production of
railroad cars in order to make gun carriages and forges. The facility was vacant by 1910, with only a
frame lumber storage building still in use. With the twentieth century expansion and rebuilding of the
central district, this office building was constructed.
