"Statement based on reports from ISG members in Minneapolis

Yesterday morning, January 24, ICE agents in Minneapolis shot and killed Alex Pretti, an anti-ICE activist, Veterans Affairs nurse, and union member in the American Federation of Government Employees. This comes a day after tens of thousands of protestors took to the streets of Minneapolis against ICE in what organizers called “A Day of Truth and Freedom.”

ICE brazenly continues to terrorize communities and murder innocent civilians in the streets. While ICE assaults, kidnaps, and kills, working people are told to accept violent and deadly attacks by ICE and police forces. We need to escalate the fight against ICE. The mass protest in Minneapolis on January 23 was significant, but we need a much greater and more organized response to demand ICE off our streets.

Minneapolis community organizations, faith leaders, and union leaders have pointed out the need for “No School, No Work, No Shopping.” But Jan 23rd saw many workers still at work, unable to call off without risking getting fired, and Minneapolis schools were all closed that day, meaning there were no student walkouts. A city-wide strike, backed by union members committed to refusing to work regardless of unjust labor laws or contract clauses that ban strikes, would do more to stop Trump and ICE in their tracks than Friday’s mass protest. "

"The Minneapolis and St Paul Regional Labor Federations of the AFL-CIO, which represent 80,000 workers, have endorsed the call for a day of action on January 23rd: “ICE Out of Minnesota: No Work, No School, No Shopping!”. In addition to the AFL-CIO in Minneapolis and St. Paul, many union locals have endorsed the day of action as well, including ATU Local 1005, CWA Local 7250, SEIU Local 26, UNITE HERE Local 17 and others. A long list of community organizations like the Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Committee, Black Lives Matter, and Veterans for Peace have also endorsed the day of action.

The January 23rd action could help unify all the various anti-ICE groups for a strong demonstration of Minneapolis workers and youth resisting a police state being imposed on them. The call for “no work” as part of the day of action, backed by the endorsement by unions, along with some progressive and left groups calling for a general strike, has raised the possibility of unions going on strike and escalating the day of action beyond protests."

For those who haven't heard yet, two strikes have kicked off in Worcester, and the Independent Socialist Group urges everyone to please support them!

On October 31st at 3pm, unionized RAs at WPI began strike action. They've posted a petition which can be signed here: ()

The WPI picket goes from 8am to 5pm Sunday and Monday. They are updating this Google doc with various strike details including picket locations and times: ()

At midnight on the same day, Clark University grad workers also launched their strike action. They will be picketing 24/7. During the weekend the picket will be at the entrance on Main Street, but come the week the pickets will extend to the other various entrances that have been picketed during past grad and undergrad worker strikes. For both strikes, Monday will likely be a big day as it is the first day while classes are on. ISG members have been visiting both strikes and will continue to organize visits. Please make time to get down to the pickets and support striking workers.
