Kinda chic to spend a Tuesday night watching a 1923 silent film accompanied by an 1864 pipe organ.

Especially when that film is The Hunchback of Notre Dame, the organ is 162 years old, and the Organist is known for improvised organ accompaniment to silent films. For one night, the Great Hall becomes a movie theater, concert hall and time machine all at once – don’t miss this unique experience!

Benjamin Walker (1809–1888), a successful Worcester merchant and founder of the Walker Ice Company, played an important role in the city’s civic and economic life. He gained skill as a blacksmith through an apprenticeship in West Boylston and came to Worcester in 1829 to open his own blacksmith shop on Waldo Street. Walker was a Worcester assessor and Alderman. A founding member and board leader of the Worcester County Mechanics Association, he helped shape Mechanics Hall’s legacy. His portrait is currently displayed in the Board Room.

Artist: Walker’s portrait was painted by Edwin T. Billings (1824–1893) and was presented to the Association in 1890 by Walker’s daughter, Mrs. Levis G. White.
