Say hello to the Worcester Public Library Foundation’s new Board President: Viviana M. Abreu-Hernández, PhD!

Viviana has served as a trustee on the Foundation’s Board for several years, including as Vice President, and we’re proud to have her stepping into this new leadership role.

A researcher, educator, advocate, and longtime champion of expanding opportunity, Viviana brings an incredible depth of experience to the Foundation. She currently serves as President of the Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center and previously served as Vice President of External Affairs at Quinsigamond Community College, where she built partnerships across Worcester and beyond.

Throughout her career, Viviana has focused on expanding educational, economic, and social opportunities, particularly for working families and communities too often overlooked. It’s a commitment that aligns beautifully with the work of the Worcester Public Library, where everyone deserves the opportunity to learn, connect, discover, and grow.

She’s a researcher. She’s an advocate. She’s a community leader. She’s a champion for equity and opportunity. And if you ask us? She really is *that girl.* 🥰

🙌 Hands up if you believe everyone deserves access to opportunity. 🙌

At Celebrate Our Library on Thursday, November 5, we’re inviting you to put your hands up for digital equity at the Worcester Public Library. 💻

Access to technology, the internet, and the skills to use them isn’t a luxury. It’s essential for learning, finding a job, accessing services, staying connected, and navigating everyday life. We believe everyone deserves the tools and resources to do it.

This year, our Fund-a-Need at Celebrate Our Library will support digital equity initiatives at WPL, helping more people access the technology we all need to thrive.

And, new this year… introducing our Leadership Giving Circle! 🥂📚

Purchase a General Admission ticket and make a Fund-a-Need gift of $500 or more during registration, and you and a registered guest will also be invited to an exclusive pre-event reception at WPL with our featured authors from 5:15–6 pm. Enjoy intimate access to the authors, ch*****ne, light bites courtesy of Worcester Restaurant Group, and a few extra perks to kick off the evening. ✨

Many of you already know and love the works of Celeste Ng, Annabel Monaghan & Jennifer Givhan — and we can’t wait to welcome them to Celebrate Our Library! 2026.

While we have a couple more weeks before the big event, we’re taking a closer look at each of these acclaimed authors and the powerful stories they’ve brought to life.

Jennifer Givhan is a Mexican American and Indigenous poet and novelist from the Southwestern desert and the recipient of poetry fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and PEN/Rosenthal Emerging Voices. She holds a Master’s degree from California State University Fullerton and a Master’s in Fine Arts from Warren Wilson College. Givhan is the author of five full-length poetry collections and the novels River Woman, River Demon, Jubilee, Trinity Sight, and Salt Bones. She lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico with her family.

WOW, WOW, WOW. 🥹♥️📚

Happy 70 YEARS to our friends at the Friends of the Worcester Public Library! And what a way to celebrate: to mark National Friends of Libraries Week, the Friends have announced a $50,000 gift to help outfit WPL’s new Great Brook Valley Branch, expected to open in 2027.

HUGE.

For seven decades, the Friends have shown what happens when a community comes together for its library. Through grassroots fundraising, community events, volunteer power, and advocacy, they help strengthen library services and make more possible for Worcester Public Library and the people it serves.

This latest gift is another example of their legacy in action, helping create a welcoming, modern space where Great Brook Valley residents can learn, connect, discover new resources, and build community for years to come.

A milestone like this deserves a whole lot of love.

TFW when the moderator asks you a question you’ve never been asked before. 👀😅

Not to be dramatic, but Stephanie Eden Pasha, moderator of our author panel at Celebrate Our Library, is truly unmatched. 🎤

A library lover with a gift for asking the unexpected, Stephanie takes both reading and the craft of writing seriously (but never takes *herself* too seriously). Every year, we get to watch her work her magic with our invited authors, drawing connections between their books, uncovering unexpected themes, and asking the kinds of questions that make everyone think a little differently.

No two author panels are ever the same, but it’s ALWAYS a conversation that’s thoughtful, funny, surprising, heartfelt, and completely its own. ♥️

As Executive Director of the Worcester Public Library, Jason Homer’s impact on our library and our city has been ENORMOUS. ♥️

As he heads off to Baltimore for his next chapter leading Baltimore County Public Library, we wish him nothing but the very best. But first, we have a proper send-off to give him. And you know WPL doesn’t do anything halfway…

So, please join us one week from today on Tuesday, October 27, from 5–7 pm at the Main Library for A Purr-fect Farewell — an all-ages party in Jason’s honor.

We’re talking cat crafts and coloring, trivia, a cat-themed photo booth, cat tattoos and stickers, giveaways, face painting, and a sock drive supporting WPL’s Community Resources Closet. Plus, cat BINGO with Worcester legend Dale Lepage! 🐾

It’s free, open to all, no RSVP required.

Democracy depends on people having access to information, the freedom to explore ideas, and the opportunity to make informed choices.

That’s why public libraries matter. 📚

Every day, libraries open doors to knowledge, encourage curiosity, and make information accessible to all.

And right now, the Worcester Public Library is opening its doors to voters, too.

Early voting for the November 3 state election is happening at the Main Library through October 30.

At the Worcester Public Library Foundation, we believe a strong public library is essential to a strong community. It’s why we work to support the people, programs, and resources that make our library such an important part of Worcester. And we know WPL is a place to learn about the world and to help shape its future.
