In 1976, the U.S. Navy relocated its toxicology research program to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, beginning five decades of scientific collaboration and research dedicated to protecting our nation’s warfighters.
Today, the Environmental Health Effects Laboratory (EHEL), part of Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) Dayton, continues that mission as the Navy’s operational toxicology laboratory.
From early studies of air quality aboard submarines to today’s investigations of environmental hazards, occupational exposures and challenges facing naval aviation, EHEL’s scientists have spent 50 years helping military leaders better understand risks to warfighter health, readiness and performance.
“Our members are focused and driven by a strong desire to protect and serve those who protect and serve our country,” said Dr. Karen Mumy, EHEL director.
As we celebrate this milestone, we recognize the generations of scientists, researchers and support personnel whose dedication has made EHEL an essential part of Navy Medicine’s research mission.
