Summitville’s Bravest had a fantastic time today visiting with students at Ellenville Elementary School! The kids were full of curiosity and had some great questions about firefighting. We had just as much fun answering them as they did asking!

It’s always a pleasure to connect with the next generation and share what it means to serve our community. Who knows? We may have met a few future firefighters today! 🚒🔥

YOU MIGHT NOT SEE THE EMERGENCY FROM THE ROADBLOCK!
You see cones.
You see an “EMERGENCY INCIDENT AHEAD” sign.
You see Fire Police or police officers standing in the roadway telling you that you can’t continue.

But what you may NOT see is what’s happening beyond them.
Around the bend there could be firefighters stretching hose across the roadway.

EMS could be treating someone seriously injured.
There could be a major crash, downed power lines, debris in the roadway, leaking fuel, an active police investigation, or emergency crews working in an area that simply isn’t safe for traffic.
The person standing at that roadblock knows what is ahead.

You don’t.

Maybe you’re running late.
Maybe the detour is inconvenient.
Maybe you can’t understand why the road is closed because, from where you are sitting, you don’t see anything happening.

But PLEASE, DON'T DRIVE AROUND THE CONES.
Don’t try to squeeze past.
Don’t argue with the Fire Police officer or police officer directing traffic.

And don’t assume the road is safe simply because you can’t see the emergency.

In 2025, 35 emergency responders were struck and killed by vehicles while assisting the public on our roadways. Sixteen of them were law-enforcement officers and three were Fire/EMS responders.

Roadway scenes are dangerous enough without responders also having to worry about someone ignoring a road closure.

If you are told to stop, turn around or follow a detour, please just do it.

You don’t have to see the emergency to respect the roadblock.

Those few extra minutes of inconvenience may help make sure that the people working beyond that roadblock get to go home.

Calling Sullivan County chiefs and officers!

Add November 15th to your calendar, and come out to the training center to see the counties special operations offerings. Talk with us about how we can help you and your department. We will be there alongside our good friends Rock Hill Fire Department - NY displaying our Swift Water, Ice Water and Rope Rescue capabilities.

Volunteer fire service officers come and go. Some leave a lasting mark on their organization, the fire service, and their community. Others simply fade into the sunset.

Those who fade away often find themselves reminding others of the “good old days” and saying, “When I was chief…”

Those who truly left their mark typically don’t have to remind anyone. Their leadership, knowledge, and influence continue long after they’ve turned in the colored helmet.

Unfortunately, in many volunteer organizations, it’s possible for an unskilled and minimally trained firefighter to move through the officer ranks and eventually become the chief. Sometimes this happens because there are simply too few qualified candidates. Other times, it’s the result of the buddy system and popularity contests that influence elections.

But eventually, the helmet comes off.

So, how do you want to be remembered?

Do you want to be the person that, long after you retire the colored helmet, members still turn to for advice, guidance, and leadership?

Or do you want to be just another face on the wall?

Rank gives you authority. Leadership earns you influence.

This recognition comes as no surprise to those of us at Summitville Fire Company. Caleb consistently shows us what a focused and dedicated Lieutenant firefighter looks like. We are very proud to have him on our team and grateful for everything he does for our community.

Congratulations to our Employee of the Month, Caleb Budd!

"Caleb consistently shows up to transition into the night shift in the emergency department with leadership, skills, and knowledge that can create calm from chaos. Caleb is an encyclopedia of knowledge, treats patients, co-workers, visitors, and everyone in between with respect. He maintains an air of calmness with rational and logical thinking that inherently supports the people around him."

"This employee is a great addition to the team. Caleb is a hard worker and everyone knows to come to him with a question and it'll be answered. Caleb is great with patients, can get any IV on the first try and is also trained with ultrasound guided IVs. Additionally, Caleb helps with any of the clerk duties and knows the athena system. I always look forward to working with Caleb because I know the patients will get the best care and I won't have to worry if I have a question. A true team player, great supervisor, and an incredible nurse."
