In today’s polarized political climate, Republicans and Democrats often find themselves on opposite sides of important issues, but there are also times when we can come together around a shared goal for our community.
The Wythe County Republican Party and the Wythe County Democrats have each considered the proposed 1% Wythe County School Construction Referendum and have chosen to jointly support its passage.
If approved by voters, the referendum would authorize Wythe County VA to levy an additional 1% local sales tax, with the revenue dedicated solely to eligible school construction and renovation projects and related financing costs. The tax would expire on June 30, 2046.
Wythe County has identified approximately $72 million in school capital needs that could be supported by this revenue, including the Spiller Elementary School project, renovations at Fort Chiswell High School, athletic facility improvements, and roof and chiller projects.
We recognize that voters may have different perspectives on taxes, spending, and how these projects should be funded. We encourage every Wythe County voter to learn about the proposal, consider its costs and potential benefits, and make an informed decision.
After considering the proposal, the Wythe County Republican Party and Wythe County Democratic Party jointly endorse voting YES on the 1% Wythe County School Construction Referendum. Whatever choices you make on the remainder of your ballot, we encourage you to learn about this local referendum and make your voice heard.
Early voting is underway, and Election Day is Tuesday, November 3. For voting information, visit the Wythe County Registrar’s Office website (www.wytheco.org/167/Elections-Voting).
