Unmistakable in silhouette, and feared for the growling “BRRRRT” of its gun, the A-10 Thunderbolt II was never built for speed or stealth. It was built for one purpose: protecting troops on the ground by annihilating whatever threatens them.

The B-58 Hustler was one of the most radical bombers ever built: the first operational bomber capable of Mach 2, it used a sleek delta wing, four podded engines, and a streamlined fuselage that made it look more like a missile than a bomber. Designed for high-speed nuclear strike missions, it often carried fuel and weaponry in a distinctive centerline pod, and its crew sat in individual escape capsules rather than ordinary ejection seats because of the extreme speeds involved.

The Hustler set multiple speed records and looked years ahead of its time, but it was also expensive, demanding, and unforgiving to operate, which gave it a short career despite its extraordinary performance.
