Today is a very special holiday to all Americans: Constitution Day!
Today I had the privilege to be one of the many lawyers and judges to teach a class on the Constitution to local schoolchildren.
I have to take a minute to brag on the South Carolina Bar, which organized the lessons and prepared the materials. The materials were not mealymouthed platitudes, but an in-depth discussion of the real words in our Constitution and their meaning, with discussion points and a worksheet to insure interaction.
I also want to take a minute to brag on the students at Gold Hill Middle School. They were bright, engaged, and asked great questions. It is clear to me why they keep getting awards for excellence: these students (month two of eighth grade!) were already familiar with how many branches of government we have, what they do, many of our enshrined rights in the Constitution, why they are important, and many of our Constitutional framers. And they all seemed suspiciously familiar with John Locke.
Now, not a one* of them knew who James Madison was, so I am glad I had something new to add!
*I only got to do two classes... I bet there are students there who know Madison đŸ˜€. Plus, I was trying to stump them.
