Happy Juneteenth, York!
Today we mark the day freedom finally arrived. President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation took effect on January 1, 1863, declaring that all enslaved people "are, and henceforward shall be free." But that promise traveled slowly and met deep resistance — it wasn't until June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers reached Galveston, Texas, that the enslaved people there learned they were free. Two and a half years after the words were written.
And even then, the work wasn't finished. The Proclamation was a wartime measure, not a law, and it didn't reach the border states loyal to the Union. True freedom wasn't fully secured until the Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery for good in December 1865.
That long road is exactly why we celebrate. Though Juneteenth wasn't recognized as a federal holiday until 2021, it has been honored every single June 19 since 1866 — making it the longest continuously celebrated African American holiday in our nation's history.

Established in 1872, Lebanon Cemetery was created by African Americans in York County to ensure dignified burial during segregation.
It stands today as one of the oldest and largest Black cemeteries in the region, a resting place, a legacy, a reminder.
