The department coordinates the County’s emergency management activities, provides fire suppression, emergency medical services, rescue services and hazardous materials responses. The department also provides: professional fire and life safety training and training program management; command and control of major emergencies; information management services; grant administration services; victim and occupant/owner assistance services; special events coordination; water and dive rescue; technical rescue; mass casualty incident management; medical response to weapons of mass destruction and mass patient care; and enforcement of the state laws and local ordinances and regulations of the County of York pertaining to animal control and protection. The department is unique within the County government, in that all of its functions operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Have you registered for tomorrow’s Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill? There is still time to sign up and participate in this preparedness drill. But did you know you can practice your earthquake safety without signing up? Tomorrow--Thursday, October 15 at 10:15 a.m.--Virginians are encouraged to participate in the drill. Regardless of where you are, take a few minutes to practice these actions that can help protect you in an earthquake:

1️⃣DROP to your hands and knees before the shaking knocks you down.
2️⃣COVER your head and neck and, if possible, take shelter under a sturdy desk or table.
3️⃣HOLD ON to your shelter until the shaking stops.

More information and registration are available at https://www.shakeout.org/.

Every small action we take can make a big impact in reducing fire risk, but we can’t guarantee a fire won’t happen. In our homes today, we have less than three minutes to escape safely if a fire occurs. Working smoke alarms are critical components of a home safety plan. Test smoke alarms every month and change batteries every year. Have working alarms in every bedroom, near where anyone sleeps and on every level of the home. Visit our smoke alarm webpage for safety tips. York County, Virginia York County School Division York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office
