Founded in 1937 by a group of businessmen, BRMEMC was established and continues to operate as a not-for-profit, member-owned, Rural Electric Cooperative. The founders elected a Board of Directors and made it their goal to bring electricity to this mountain area. In June 1938, the EMC was incorporated and an agreement was executed naming The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) as the supplier of electricity. Agreements were made with the Rural Electrification Administration to borrow money for construction and the work began. From that humble beginning BRMEMC now serves over 46,000 customers, over 53,000 meters and will continue to grow with the community.

BRMEMC's updated Customer Portal/Dashboard is now live. Member-customers can once again view daily and monthly usage as well as monthly account statements by visiting www.brmemc.com and clicking Bill Pay in the top right corner. The next step is to log in (using a username and password that you create), then from the Accounts page under the heading "More" there are several useful links. There are some wording changes still to be made on the page, but we are working with our vendor, Paymentus, to get that remedied. We appreciate the patience of our members while we worked closely with our vendor to upgrade these features.

Isaias Storm Restoration - Final
(Photo is NWS Radar at 3 AM on 10/10/26)

BRMEMC began experiencing impacts from remnants of Hurricane Isaias in the early morning hours of Saturday, October 10, as strong winds and rain moved into the area. In total, BRMEMC experienced a total of 119 outages affecting just under 9,500 member-customers during the event. Outages were spread around the entire system with the southern portions of the system impacted most heavily. In total BRMEMC reparied 15 broken poles and had the majority of member-customers restored by 10:30 pm Saturday evening. Designated standby personnel were able to maintain the balance of any outages after that time.

In total, BRMEMC attributed 17 initial hours of work to the immediate storm response, but more clean-up will be required today (Monday, October 12). BRMEMC attributes the speed and success of recovery to many factors including our aggressive right-of-way maintenance program, and our technological advances that enable us to locate outages more efficiently, but most importantly to the dedication, hard work and coordinated efforts of each of our employees. Their work during challenging events like this reminds us how fortunate we are to be part of such an amazing team, and reflects their continued commitment to providing safe, affordable and reliable electric and fiber-optic services to our members.

Thanks to each BRMEMC member for their patience, support and words of support and encouragement as we battled this storm.

Blue Ridge Mountain EMC continues to respond to damage caused by Hurricane Isaias that occurred throughout last night and today, October 10. As of 7 pm this evening, a total of 26 outages affecting 283 meters remain out on the system. Damage from this hurricane was widespread across the entire region, with the southernmost portions of the BRMEMC service territory affected most significantly.

Please be patient with our crews as they restore service to these remaining outages. With nightfall quickly approaching, the job of restoration is made much more difficult. We appreciate your understanding!

BRMEMC continues to closely monitor Hurricane Isaias as it makes its expected landfall late today and moves north across Alabama and Tennessee. While the current track shows the storm tracking well to our west, please remember that the stronger winds are most likely on the eastern side of these kinds of storms.

The most recent forecasts have continued to warn southeast Tennessee, southwest North Carolina and northern Georgia to be alert for 30-40 mph winds, with the potential for 60+ mph wind speeds in the highest elevations. The expected rain totals have dropped slightly with this storm, but any rain combined with strong winds can lead to trees falling resulting in power outages.

To be clear, this storm is not shaping up to be one of our worst, but BRMEMC still urges its members to make preparations now just in case. We will continue to closely monitor the weather over the next several hours and days, and will respond quickly to outages that may occur. Thank you!

BRMEMC is asking its members to be aware of and begin planning for a hurricane expected to make landfall Friday evening somewhere near Pensacola, FL, and impacting weather across North Georgia and Western North Carolina this weekend. The National Weather Service is saying that at this point the greatest threat to our region is expected to be 40-50 mph winds arriving by Saturday morning, especially on the southern facing mountain ridges. Heavy rainfall is also anticipated, but expected totals are below 2.5 inches (worst case). There is also an increased threat of tornadoes from Saturday and into early Sunday.

We want all of our members to remain safe throughout events like this, and it is why we encourage residents to prepare now. Having some extra food, water, required medications, and other necessities close by is advisable if the event turns out worse than expected.

BRMEMC is standing by and closely watching this event. Our entire team is ready and will respond as necessary this weekend. Remember to utilize BRMEMC's Outage Viewer http://outage.brmemc.com:8008/ to see up-to-the-minute reports of outage events. Also, please find details about our Outage Texting system by navigating to:

BRMEMC is experiencing a widespread outage affecting just under 1,000 members from the new Hanging Dog substation through Grape Creek and Unaka and all the way around to the Beaverdam Gap. This outage was caused by a dead tree outside the right-of-way falling through our three-phase line and splintering a pole near the entrance to the old Hanging Dog Campground at approximately 1:21 am. Accessing the pole has proven difficult for our crews who have been working on this outage since early this morning. We are making some progress, but the outage may still take a couple more hours to repair. Please be patient as we diligently work to restore service to our members in the area.

Patriot Day 2026

On this 25th Anniversary of the tragic and barbaric terroristic events that unfolded in New York City, Shanksville, PA, and Washington, DC, we remember and honor those who were lost and salute our heroes who unselfishly rushed to defend and provide assistance. As has been said many times, September 11, 2001, is evidence of the worst of humanity, but it also demonstrated the strength, resolve, bravery and unity of the people of our great country. May God Bless the United States of America.

Blue Ridge Mountain EMC will never forget...
