Tick season is here!!!

As the weather warms up, ticks become more active in grassy, brushy, and wooded areas.

Protect yourself and your family when spending time outdoors:
• Wear long sleeves and pants when hiking or working outside
• Use EPA-registered insect repellent
• Check yourself, kids, and pets for ticks after being outdoors
• Shower soon after coming inside
• Remove ticks promptly with fine-tipped tweezers

Watch for symptoms after a tick bite, including fever, rash, fatigue, headaches, or muscle aches, and contact a healthcare provider if you become sick.

This Memorial Day Weekend, as we honor the heroes who gave their lives in military service to this nation, the Klamath National Forest would like to remind forest visitors that conditions in and around the forest are dry and it is possible to inadvertently start a wildfire.

If you are planning on coming out to the forest this holiday weekend, here’s the situation...

After a historically dry winter and early spring rains, there is a healthy crop of grass, which has begun curing out at lower elevations. Firefighters call these ‘flashy fuels’ because they ignite easily and fires spread quickly in them.

The recent uptick in human-caused fires around our area demonstrates how receptive these fuels are to sparks. Add to that a weekend forecast that includes temperatures 10-15 degrees above normal and potential for gusty winds.

It is critical that visitors to the forest are vigilant with anything that can start a fire. It only takes one spark from an unattended campfire, a ricocheting bullet, driving on a flat tire, or dragging a trailer safety chain to start a wildfire.

Thank you for helping to protect your public lands this holiday weekend by remembering to recreate responsibly and being careful with anything that can start a wildfire.
