Congressman James Gallagher is calling on the FBI to launch a federal investigation into thousands of illegal ma*****na grows in Siskiyou and Shasta Counties, where transnational criminal networks — some with suspected foreign financing — have been linked to toxic pesticides, depleted water supplies, and threats to rural families. A 2022 grand jury report estimated 5,000 large-scale illegal cultivation sites, with more recent figures suggesting up to 7,000 illegal growers in the Mount Shasta Vista subdivision alone, potentially generating up to $2 billion annually.

Please join us in congratulating Deputy Towne who just graduated the Adult Correctional Officer CORE Course in Shasta County! This program is an intensive 5 week, 195 hour training course that is required of all full-time Adult Correctional Officer working within local jail facilities throughout California.

We are truly proud of Deputy Towne for his standout work during this training, and for the long hours he committed to each week in Shasta. The Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office is truly fortunate to have such a dedicated and caring team of Correctional Deputies and staff, and we wish these our newest graduate all the best in this next phase of his career!

It is with profound sadness that the California Highway Patrol announces the line-of-duty death of Officer Brian Liles of the Visalia Area.

On September 28, 2026, at approximately 5:11 p.m., CHP Motorcycle Officer Liles was involved in an on-duty traffic crash on State Route 99, just north of State Route 190 in Tipton. He sustained critical injuries and, despite lifesaving efforts, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Officer Liles, 44, served the people of California for more than 16 years. After graduating from the CHP Academy in 2010, he was assigned to the San Jose Area and later served in the Hayward and Fresno Areas before transferring to the Visalia Area in 2019.

Officer Liles is survived by his wife, two children, his parents, and two sisters.

The CHP extends its deepest condolences to Officer Liles’ family, friends, loved ones, and all who served alongside him. His dedication to public service and commitment to protecting the people of California will not be forgotten.
