Restraints Aren’t Just Seat Belts

Restraints in long-term care aren’t always obvious. They can include anything that limits a resident’s freedom of movement, like tray tables, tightly tucked sheets, locked chairs, or medications used to control behavior.

Every resident has the right to be free from unnecessary restraints. These practices can impact dignity, independence, and overall well-being.

Understanding what restraints look like is the first step in protecting resident rights. The Long-Term Care Ombudsman program advocates for residents, works to address concerns, and helps ensure care is safe, respectful, and person-centered.

If you have questions or concerns about restraints or resident care, support is available.

Contact your local Ombudsman at 530-229-1435 or 1-800-231-4024 | Crisis Line open 24 hours a day
