Sutter County Fire Department personnel attended the annual California Firefighters Memorial Ceremony on Oct. 3 to honor former SCFD Captain Michael R. Fenn, who passed away in 2025.

Cpt. Fenn served the Sutter County community for more than two decades, spending much of his career at Live Oak Station 5. He began his service with SCFD as a volunteer before rising through the ranks and eventually retiring as a fire captain in 2015.

The annual California Firefighters Memorial Ceremony honors firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty or from a job-related illness. As part of this year's ceremony, Cpt. Fenn's name was among 37 new entries etched into the California Firefighters Memorial Wall in Sacramento's Capitol Park. His family was in attendance and was presented with a flag in his honor by SCFD Battalion Chief Carlos Del Rio.

Cpt. Fenn's legacy of service to Sutter County will not be forgotten.

Members of Girl Scout Troop 887 stopped by Sutter County Fire Station 8 on Sunday and brought our firefighters a very welcome donation: cookies! 🍪

While they were here, we gave the girls a quick tour of the station and fire apparatus and enjoyed getting to spend a little time with them.

Thank you, Troop 887, for thinking of our firefighters and for the generous donation. We can assure you, those cookies will be put to good use!

This summer, 10 community members took part in the inaugural LEAP Into Sutter County Community Academy, a five-week program created to give residents a closer look at how County government works and the services it provides.

Throughout the five sessions, participants visited County facilities, met with staff from a variety of departments, asked questions and gained a deeper understanding of the work happening across Sutter County.

A big thank you to our inaugural LEAP participants for their time, curiosity and willingness to learn more about their local government. We appreciate each of you for taking part!

Sutter County Ends Intermittent Fire Station Brownouts

As of 7 a.m. today, the Sutter County Fire Department has reopened all of its fire stations following a period of temporary, intermittent brownouts caused by critically low staffing levels.

The brownouts originally went into effect at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 25. At the time, the department had four fire engineer vacancies across its three stations, along with five additional team members on leave. This reduced staffing to 50% of normal levels.

The County developed a plan to rotate brownouts every 48 hours between Oswald Station 8, located at 1280 Barry Road in Yuba City, and Sutter Station 6, located at 2340 California St. in Sutter. The plan was designed to mitigate impacts to residents while maintaining the highest level of emergency response coverage possible for rural areas.

The County moved quickly to recruit and interview additional personnel, expediting the hiring process to restore staffing to levels necessary to safely operate all stations. Since that process began, the department has onboarded three extra-help firefighters to bolster its team, and firefighters who had been on leave have returned.

“We appreciate the public’s patience and understanding as we worked through this staffing challenge,” said Sutter County Fire Chief Kyle Long. “Our priority throughout this process has been to maintain safe staffing for our firefighters while providing the best possible emergency response coverage to the community."

At this time, the department does not anticipate any additional station brownouts, barring any unforeseen circumstances. The Sutter County Fire Department will continue to monitor staffing levels and operational needs to maintain safe and effective emergency response coverage throughout the County.

Sutter County Initiates Intermittent Fire Station Brownouts Due to Staffing Levels

Sutter County has temporarily browned out Oswald Station 8 (1280 Barry Road, Yuba City) due to low staffing levels, which went into effect at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, August 25. The County developed a plan to rotate brownouts between two Sutter County Fire Department stations until staffing levels allow operations to resume safely.

Brownouts are a last-resort staffing measure necessary to ensure fire personnel can operate safely while maintaining emergency response coverage through other available resources.

Sutter County Fire Department currently has four fire engineer vacancies across its three stations. Five additional team members are currently on leave. This leaves staffing at critically low levels.

“We recognize the importance of maintaining reliable emergency response coverage throughout Sutter County,” said Sutter County Fire Chief Kyle Long. “We have a plan in place to address current staffing challenges. The County is actively recruiting additional personnel and has expedited the interview and hiring process to bring staffing to a level necessary to operate all stations at a capacity that ensures the safety of personnel and the community."

As part of a plan to mitigate service impacts, the County will rotate the brownout between Oswald Station 8 and Sutter Station 6 (2340 California St., Sutter) every 48 hours to provide coverage to rural residents at the highest possible level. During the intermittent brownout, other Sutter County stations are providing primary response. Yuba City Fire and surrounding agencies will provide assistance when available.

Sutter County appreciates the cooperation of its emergency response partners and the community as the department works to maintain the most effective coverage possible while addressing current staffing challenges.

VEHICLE ACCIDENT / VEGETATION FIRE – LIVE OAK

At approximately 4:00 p.m. this afternoon, Sutter County Fire responded to a vehicle accident in Live Oak involving a downed power pole and a vegetation fire in the front yard of a residence.

The fire was threatening one residence and one mobile home. Thanks to a quick response from both fire and law enforcement personnel, crews were able to achieve a fast knockdown and prevent the fire from spreading to either structure.

Fire crews are currently on scene and assisting PG&E with cleanup operations and removal of the vehicle.

Traffic & Power Impacts:
Larkin Road, from Nevada Street to just beyond the Live Oak city limits, will be closed to through traffic while crews continue working. Power in the affected area will also remain out for an undetermined period of time while PG&E makes the necessary repairs.

There were no reported injuries from the vehicle accident. All involved parties were evaluated and declined medical transport.

Please avoid the area and allow emergency crews and PG&E personnel room to work safely.

Earlier this week, the Sutter County Fire Department had the opportunity to welcome participants from the LEAP Into Sutter County Community Academy to Sutter Station 6.

During the session, participants got an inside look at how our department serves the community through an overview of our operations, a question-and-answer discussion with fire personnel, and a hands-on demonstration of the specialized extrication equipment our firefighters use to help rescue people trapped in vehicles.

We were proud to be part of Sutter County's first LEAP Academy and enjoyed sharing what we do with members of our community. Building relationships and helping residents better understand the services we provide is an important part of our mission.
